Village of Mundelein commits to sustainable, low-carbon B20 fuel

The B20 Club of Illinois has expanded its membership with four additional organizations that support B20 biodiesel as a readily available, low-carbon fuel solution for Illinois communities. Two new B20 Club fleet members are the village of Mundelein and Wilmette Park District, and two new B20 Club associate members are Luke Oil and Pinkerton Oil.

Founded in 2014, the B20 Club is a partnership between the Illinois Soybean Association and American Lung Association.

“We are pleased to welcome these new member organizations as they join our efforts to promote use of biodiesel to improve air quality and support the Illinois economy,” said David Kubik, ISA biofuels and trade policy manager.

The Village of Mundelein prides itself as an environmentally friendly community, with active initiatives promoting sustainability. B20 is a natural fit for the village’s 53 diesel-powered vehicles. The village started with B5 seasonally, advanced to B11 in 2022 and now uses B20 year-round to fuel fire trucks, ambulances, snowplows, specialized municipal equipment and other diesel-powered vehicles.

“B20 is a big asset to our community. It has positive environmental aspects and helps keep our vehicles operating smoothly. Using B20 and joining the B20 Club is part of the ongoing movement in our village,” village of Mundelein vehicle Maintenance Supervisor Dan Friberg said.

The expansive Wilmette Park District incorporates 18 parks, playgrounds, picnic areas and seasonal activities that include golf, tennis and ice skating, as well as swimming, sailing and kayaking on its Lake Michigan shoreline. As part of its mission to preserve green space, the Wilmette Park District utilizes B20 to fuel diesel-powered trucks and other equipment used to maintain park land, trails and roads.

“B20 is a key component of our eco-friendly mission. We continue to have confidence in B20 and look forward to gaining more knowledge and resources through our B20 Club partnership,” said Kristi Solberg, Wilmette Park District superintendent of parks and planning.

B20 Club associate members represent production and marketing sectors of the biodiesel industry. Two new B20 Club associate members, both part of the Luke Family of Brands, are Luke Oil and Pinkerton Oil. The new B20 Club members are among municipalities, utilities, trucking companies, marine fleets, fuel suppliers and other organizations who have joined the B20 Club since 2014.
