Support cancer survivors at Northwestern Medicine Walk & 5K

Lace up those running or walking shoes and head to Northwestern Medicine Field to celebrate cancer survivors and help raise money for patients and families.

Set for Saturday, Oct. 19, the event includes a chip-timed 5K run and a 1-mile walk, followed by a family-friendly festival at the field, home of the Kane County Cougars and located at 34W002 Cherry Lane in Geneva. This year's event promises an enhanced participant experience, featuring a new and improved run/walk route, therapy dogs greeting attendees and various fun giveaways.

The Northwestern Medicine Walk & 5K will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19, with special participation by cancer survivors. The event raises awareness and funds for Northwestern Medicine Living Well Cancer Resources, which empowers and supports cancer patients and their families.

“In addition, we have cancer survivor participation via opening remarks and leading the run,” said Nixie Castello, Philanthropy Associate for Northwestern Medicine. “This is the biggest celebration for cancer survivors in the Western suburbs!”

Day-of event registration and T-shirt pick up opens at 8 a.m., with festivities kicking off at 9 a.m. and the 5K starting at 9:20 a.m., followed by the 1-mile walk beginning at 9:45 a.m. Net proceeds from the event will support educational and clinical programs offered by Northwestern Medicine Living Well Cancer Resources. Living Well aims to empower and support cancer patients and their families, helping them enhance their quality of life.

“This event is a symbol of unity, support and hope for individuals and families affected by cancer,” Castello said. “The Northwestern Medicine Walk & 5K provides a space for everyone to come together, share their stories and raise awareness, providing people the opportunity to connect with others facing similar challenges and take action towards change. It is more than just an event, it is a celebration of community and resilience.”

Among the sponsors helping to make the Walk & 5K possible is the Gerald Auto Group.

“Gerald’s support strengthens our fundraising efforts and also amplifies our visibility within the community,” Castello said. “Their returning commitment reflects how invested they are in the health and well-being of the community. We look forward to collaborating with them for years to come to help make this event even more impactful for deserving individuals.”

Donna Lawler of the Gerald Auto Group emphasized that commitment.

“We believe in the power of coming together to support those affected by cancer,” Lawler said. “Being part of the 2024 Northwestern Medicine Walk & 5K allows us to make a meaningful impact in our community.”
