Daily Herald photo contest winners for August 2024

August was a month for capturing the vibrant colors of summer with pictures of birds and butterflies, flowers and frogs.

Mary Fink of Lake Villa takes first place by capturing an intriguing photo of a slender green frog seemingly balancing itself on the petals of a flower. Fink writes, “This little frog seemed to enjoy my black-eyed Susans as much as I do. I like its green against the bright golden flower.”

“Summertime Sunflower” in my August garden in Algonquin. Marilyn McNichols of Algonquin

Second place goes to a lovely photo by Marilyn McNichols of Algonquin of a butterfly and a bee pollinating a sunflower in her Algonquin garden. The swirling look at the center of the flower head almost creates a sense of motion.

A photo of a whiskey jack that I took while hiking in the Garibaldi Range near Whistler, British Columbia. John Cosentino of Arlington Heights

During a hiking trip in British Columbia, John Cosentino of Arlington Heights took this playful third-place photo of a Canada jay, also known colloquially as a whiskeyjack. Cosentino writes, “This is a photo favorite of mine because of the friendly and curious look on the jack’s face.”

This photo was taken at the Morton Arboretum on a beautiful Sunday, Aug. 18. Rita Boserup of Glen Ellyn

Rita Boserup of Glen Ellyn glides into fourth place with this glistening photo of a heron landing on a lake on the Morton Arboretum grounds. She writes, “I was walking with a friend and the heron swooped over us and landed in the lake. He was there for a minute until other hikers scared him away, so I was in the right place at the right time. I love the reflection of the bird in the water and how he is framed by the greenery.”

This frog that sat outside my windowsill and kept jumping at the window. Connie Pfeifer of Libertyville

August was a popular month for charming photos of frogs, so we’re also giving an honorable mention to this close-up by Connie Pfeifer of Libertyville. She writes, “He and I enjoyed quite a few glances at each other through the window this summer.”
