Aurora brings in Lunar New Year, announces plans for new Asian American Heritage Board

Lunar New Year began Feb. 10, and Aurora honored the occasion with a New Year’s celebration to usher in the Year of the Dragon.

City officials joined Aurora’s Chinese leaders and community members for the New Year celebration held at Pacifica Square, Aurora’s Asian-theme shopping mall, which has more than two dozen Asian-owned businesses.

Along with lighting of firework and remarks from officials, guests were delighted by a traditional dragon dance that circled the crowd and Chinese performances.

In honor of the occasion, the city announced it will be launching this year the process to begin a new Asian American Heritage Board as a counterpart to its African American Heritage Board, Hispanic Heritage Board, and Indian American Heritage Board.
