Arlington Heights trustees to take up Arlington Park zoning plan Monday

Just days after the Chicago Bears confirmed the team has submitted a bid to purchase Arlington Park, the Arlington Heights village board will meet Monday night to consider approval of new zoning regulations that will govern what can and what cannot be built on the 326-acre site.

The regulations, endorsed by the village's plan commission earlier this month, would allow a sports stadium, as well as continued horse racing. They would prohibit at least 23 uses for the property, including adult businesses, car washes, currency exchanges, kiddie parks, funeral parlors and warehouses.

Village officials decided to create the zoning overlay after Arlington Park owner Churchill Downs Inc. announced in February it is selling the iconic racing oval. After a deadline for bids passed last week, company officials said they are reviewing proposals and would announce next steps at the "appropriate time."

The village board meets at 7:30 p.m. at village hall, 33 S. Arlington Heights Road.
