US education official apologizes for poor judgment, behavior
WASHINGTON (AP) - A senior Education Department official is apologizing for poor judgment and "unacceptable" behavior. The department's inspector general concluded he was working on his side businesses with subordinates, failed to pay taxes on his profits and awarded a government contract to a friend's company.
That senior department official, department Chief Information Officer Danny Harris, was expected to testify Tuesday to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
It's the first detailed public accounting of the 2013 investigation by the Education Department's inspector general.
Harris received counseling but was not expected to face any other punishment. Federal prosecutors declined to file criminal charges.
