Cronin seeks applicants for DuPage County Board vacancy

Whoever is selected to replace the late Jerry "JR" McBride on the DuPage County Board must support efforts to make county government smarter and more efficient, according to the person responsible for nominating someone for the position.

County board Chairman Dan Cronin is accepting applications for the District 4 board seat that's been vacant since McBride's death on Oct. 24.

The district McBride represented covers all or parts of Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Lisle, Lombard, Wheaton and Winfield.

Individuals interested in serving for the remainder of McBride's term, which expires Nov. 30, 2016, must live in the district. They also need to be Republicans because that was the political party McBride belonged to.

Cronin made it clear he's not going to appoint someone who wants county government to grow and be more bureaucratic.

"I want somebody that shares our viewpoint about limited government and understands the wisdom of accountability, consolidation and transparency," he said.

He also wants to pick someone who's a good team player.

"Most importantly, we want somebody that's smart and virtuous," he said.

To be considered for the county board seat, applicants must send the following to Cronin's office:

• a cover letter of intent summarizing the reasons the applicant is interested in serving on the county board (no more than 300 words);

• a resume;

• and an application, which can be found at dupageco.org/district4app.

Applications will be screened and a candidate forum for finalists will be held Nov. 22.

Cronin is planning to pick a nominee in time for the full county board to take a Dec. 9 vote on the appointment.

A map of the District 4 boundaries can be found at dupageco.org/CountyBoard/Dist4Map.

The deadline to submit nominations is 5 p.m. Nov. 18.

Nominations can be submitted by mail to the county board office at 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, IL 60187, or by email to chairman@dupageco.org or by fax to (630) 407-6001.
