Jay Jacobs also won first place for Dramatic Interpretation and seventh place went to Elino Pucci of Harvard and Richard Singletary of Crystal Lake took fourth place in Extemporaneous Speaking and fifth place in Impromptu Speaking. Overall, the team won fourth place in Two-Year College Team Sweepstakes.

“This was the first time the team won three first places at the state tournament,” said Forensics team coach Bonnie Gabel.

In April, MCC will compete in the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament scheduled in Schaumburg.

To prepare for the tournament, the team will perform their national events in a series of showcases in MCC’s Black Box Theatre, Room D167 at 7:30 p.m. on April 2, 4, and 5 and at 2:30 p.m. on April 4 and 5. The showcases are open to the public. Tickets are $5 and proceeds from these performances will help fund the team’s national competition.

The state tournament success came on the heels of winning sixth place out of 19 teams at Harper College’s 2012 Litrenta Triangle Forensics Tournament in February. Highlights for the MCC team included third place for Readers Theatre. Individual awards were presented to Richard Singletary of Cary, first place for Extemporaneous Speaking; Johanna Klay and Jay Jacobs, fifth place for Dramatic Duo Interpretation; and John Cox, sixth place for both Dramatic Interpretation and Group Communication.
