Quinn says legislative scholarships should end

CHICAGO — Gov. Pat Quinn says a legislative scholarship program that's had "a cloud of scandal around it for decades" should be abolished.

Quinn was asked by reporters Tuesday about reports of a federal investigation touching on the program.

The governor didn't comment directly on those reports. But he repeated his position that the university-funded scholarships handed out by state lawmakers should end.

Quinn says he'll take action by the end of the week on a bill that would set some limits on the program.

Published reports say federal prosecutors have subpoenaed records regarding scholarships former state legislator Robert Molaro granted to a supporter's children.

A phone message left by The Associated Press for Molaro, now a lobbyist, wasn't immediately returned. He's said there was nothing wrong with the scholarships he awarded.
