Arrests in alleged Chicago-based narcotics ring

Authorities say 38 suspects in three states are facing federal narcotics charges in an investigation of an alleged heroin- and cocaine-trafficking ring based in Chicago.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Chicago on Wednesday announced multiple arrests in Chicago; in Cincinnati, Ohio, and in Laredo, Texas.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald says the case is part of an overall effort to disrupt drug-trafficking organizations in Chicago.

The prosecutor's office says the investigation initially focused on Chicago, then expanded to include other cities.

In the investigation, authorities have made numerous seizures, including of more than 30 pounds of heroin and more than $1 million.

Several of the suspects have already appeared before a federal judge. Other detention hearings are expected to take place over coming days.
