Ill. lawmakers returning to work, but to do what?
CHICAGO — Top officials have decided to call lawmakers into special session next week, even without a plan for resolving the dispute over state spending and construction.
The session is scheduled for June 22. The governor and legislative leaders agreed to it during a meeting Wednesday afternoon in Chicago.
The session is supposed to consider a bill granting routine permission to spend money on construction projects, such as highway improvements. Without that permission, officials say they'll have to shut down all construction before July 1.
But Senate Democrats added $430 million in other types of spending to the bill during the spring legislative session. The House refused to go along.
Now the bill is stuck in legislative limbo.
