Stanton raises $3,500 for charityThirty-four students from Stanton School in Fox Lake raised $3,523 in just two weeks for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital by participating in the Math-A-Thon. The free, educational program helped Stanton students practice and prepare for ISAT testing, while at the same time helped children fighting cancer and other deadly diseases at St. Jude.Mad Hatter's Tea PartyOne Hope United's "Mad Hatter's Tea Party" featuring the 7th Annual Blue Ribbon Fashion Show is set for 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, April 18, at The Lehmann Mansion, 485 Milwaukee Ave., Lake Villa. This year's event will include a tea tasting, luncheon, raffles, the annual fashion show featuring children and families, and live and silent auctions. The session will be at village hall, 325 N. O'Plaine Road, and is open to the public. Elected officials will focus on the police and pension funds. Last week, the board voted 4-2 in favor of enacting a tax increase for wireless and landline telephones owned by residents and businesses. An additional $650,000 is projected for the next budget year starting May 1 with the phone tax rate going from 1 to 6 percent. The hike is expected to start in July.New location for forest permitsDog exercise area passes, horse trail use permits, picnic shelter reservations or other permits can be purchased at the Lake County Forest Preserve District's new operations and public safety facility, 19808 W. Grand Ave., just west of Route 45 in Lindenhurst. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Purchases also can be made by calling (847) 968-3411. The new location houses several offices that had been located in the Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda, including: construction; mechanical services; forestry; natural resource and maintenance; and, public safety. Permits and shelter reservations are also available at www.LCFPD.org or (847) 367-6640.Dist. 70 raises $15,000Libertyville Elementary District 70 students, teachers and parents collected nearly $15,000 in a little more than a month to help a school in Haiti that was damaged in the earthquake. A check for $14,800 will be presented during the school board meeting tonight to Haitian native Ruth Paul Caudle, who founded the Spirit of Truth School in Guibert, Haiti. District 70 students set up hot chocolate stands, sold homemade crafts door-to-door and held bake sales. Teachers collected tents, blankets and toiletries, and donated ticket sale money from a staff talent show. Five-gallon water jugs were posted at each school to collect loose change. Caudle said she was overwhelmed by the donation, and it will go a long way toward repairing the building and helping students in need.Hydrant flushing in LindenhurstThe village of Lindenhurst will flush hydrants during the week of April 5-9, depending on weather. The process will happen daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents are urged not to do laundry during the hydrant flushing because clothes may become stained.
