Jackie Gleasonís Miami Beach Home Re-Listed for $2.399M
On and off the market since 2008, the home at 2232 Alton Rd, Miami Beach, FL 33140 was recently re-listed for $2.399 million.
According to The Real Deal, the home was listed for as much as $3.05 million in October 2009. However, Zillow listing information shows that Gleason’s home was initially listed for $2.980 million in 2008, with a price cut to $2.599 million in July 2010.
The classic mid-century home with an art deco flair was built in 1959 and boasts 7,800 square feet of living space including 8 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, 3 kitchens, a gym and a first-floor bar decked out in fire-engine red and tiles. There’s a separate wing for help or guests, and as the listing description says, it’s perfect for someone who likes to throw a party. However, there’s no swimming pool — maybe because the massive house takes up much of the .15-acre lot.
Gleason moved into the place in 1964, when he brought his mega-popular TV variety show to Miami. The Jackie Gleason Theater continues to bear testimony to that bygone era.
One of the draws to the home for “The Great One” was its proximity to the Miami Beach Golf Course, where Gleason and Richard Nixon golfed and hatched campaign strategy for NIxon’s 1968 presidential bid.
Gleason’s legacy would continue to be embellished throughout his career as a comedian and actor, but it was his work on the 39 episodes of “The Honeymooners” that secured his entertainment credentials. As bus driver Ralph Kramden, always scheming to find a way up from his working-class station, Gleason brought humor and pathos to his most famous character.
Even after Gleason and “The Jackie Gleason Show” moved to Miami, where the multi-talented entertainer enjoyed the trappings of his life, he was never far from his own tough-luck roots in New York. “The Honeymooners” was faithful to Gleason’s impoverished childhood: The Kramdens lived in a ratty apartment at 328 Chauncey St, Brooklyn, NY 11233, which was the real address of the apartment where Gleason lived as a boy. That 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom apartment in Brooklyn is currently for rent for $1,550 per month.
