Illinois City Named One of Nationís Prettiest
A favorite get-away for Chicagoans and other area Midwest residents has made Forbes’ newest list of Prettiest American Cities.
Galena, Ill., was tabbed along with Breckenridge, Colo,.; Edgartown, Mass.; New Iberia, La.; Holland, Mich.; and 10 other U.S. cities to form a bucket list of places that capture the beauty and spirit of small-city America.
Forbes said that even after comparing all the compelling and pretty Midwest cities, it was difficult to leave out idyllic Galena, calling it “a perennial favorite” on best-of lists. The town earns its accolades with almost 30 unique eateries and a Main Street U.S.A.-feel that must be in the mind’s eye of every location scout in Hollywood.
“Gorgeous rolling hills look out to the Mississippi River Valley, and the historic buildings along postcard-pretty Main Street house an eclectic array of restaurants and shops,” said Kendra Williams, travel editor for Midwest Living magazine.
Editors were so enthralled with Galena that they decided that while many Illinois and Iowa residents flock to Galena, it was time to push its merits as a camera-friendly town to a wider, national audience.
To come up with its list, Forbes used travel experts from Frommer’s, National Geographic, Fodor’s, and Midwest Living magazine.
“Of course, ‘prettiest’ is subjective, and there are many other towns around the country that would fit the bill – but we chose 15 that we think would not only stand out in a beauty pageant, but also provide great options for your next getaway,’’ Forbes stated.
While big cities like Chicago, Colorado Springs, Denver, San Francisco, Seattle and San Diego are often citied by list makers as great places to live for job and economic opportunity, this latest list from Forbes spotlights some of the under-the-radar treasures. Other notable pretty cities included Anna Maria, Fla.; Camden, Maine; Decorah, Iowa; Fort Benton, Mont.; Athens. Ga.; Lambertville, N.J.; Kapa’a, Hawaii; Ashville, N.C.; Leavenworth, Wash.; Holland, Mich.; and Fish Creek, Wis.
Forbes noted that quality of life is enhanced in these places by beautiful terrain, postcard-perfect downtowns and quieter lifestyles.
