Grant gets it done — barely — against Barrington Feb 19, 2013 12:00 AM
What a night it was for Grant wrestling. In a highly charged atmosphere inside the Bulldogs postage stamp sized gym Tuesday night, Troy Parent and Noah Drabek settled a thrilling contest with back-to-back victories for the finishing touches on a 28-25 win over Mid-Suburban league champ Barrington. Grant’s victory in its own dual-team sectional puts the Bulldogs in Saturday’s Class 3A quarterfinals at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. There Grant (25-1-0) will meet Lincoln-Way Central (20-2-0), which defeated Edwardsville 28-25, at 11 a.m.

Marmion secures its 2nd state berth Feb 19, 2013 12:00 AM
Marmion was starting to feel the heat from St. Rita. In their first quest to make the state quarterfinals in wrestling in three years, the Cadets, who never trailed the Mustangs Tuesday night at the Class 3A Hinsdale South team sectional, suddenly found a resurgent St. Rita vying for a comeback. But the Cadets’ Alex Fritz, a four-year varsity starter, put any notions of a St. Rita come-from-behind win on the backburner by applying his second takedown of his heavyweight match in the waning seconds to put his imprints on a 5-1 victory. The simple decision, which Dylan Duncan then ratified with a 4-1 victory at 106 pounds in the final match in Darian, ensured Marmion its second Elite Eight appearance in program history.

Dundee-Crown’s Griggel takes 4th at state Feb 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Ask Ray Griggel if it it wasn’t for bad luck then you wouldn’t have any at all applies to him and the Dundee-Crown senior might just have to agree. After all, a torn ligament in his left arm during his freshmen year, followed by a skin infection just before the postseason wiped out his season for good last year then this fall, an attempt to block a kick resulted in a freak shoulder injury threatened to end his year for good. However, there are ways to erase bad luck without some crazy old world method or magic potions, and for Griggel it was good old fashioned hard work and persistence, both of which he has plenty of. Saturday afternoon, he was rewarded for it all when he captured a fourth-place finish at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament at Assembly Hall.

Third will have to do for Cochrane, Weber, Tortorice Feb 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Jake Cochrane, the most celebrated heavyweight in Carmel Catholic history, saw his dreams go up in smoke late Friday night. Instead of a headline that celebrated the No.-1 rated Corsairs senior winning a state title, the final story of the wrestling season for Lake County says Cochrane, Justin Weber of Stevenson and Devin Tortorice of Wauconda all bring home a third-place trophy from the 76th state tournament.

Kaneland's Goress reaches final Feb 15, 2013 12:00 AM
With its rich tradition in the sport of wrestling, Marmion Academy, and several of its wrestlers, have cornered the lion's share of publicity during the past few seasons. But Kaneland senior Dan Goress (145, 40-3) found a way to make a dent in the Cadets' overall press coverage Friday night with his latest work, a remarkable 6-minute performance during the semfinals of the state tournament to advance into tonight's final against Michael Sepke (36-9) after a hard-fought, and well deserved 5-3 triumph over Chase Vosburgh (40-2) of Mt. Vernon.

Annoreno out, Cullen still alive at state Feb 15, 2013 12:00 AM
There won’t be another state wrestling championship banner hanging in honor of Sal Annoreno this year. The superb Bartlett 138-pounder was dealt a harsh blow for another state title Friday morning when Belleville West senior Mech Spraggins outlasted the Hawks senior 5-3 in a thrilling quarterfinal match inside Assembly Hall. Later, the NIU-bound Annoreno would fall in his wrestle-back opener to Matt Sears of Marist to officially put an end to a brilliant three-year career at the school. “What can you say?” began Bartlett head coach John O’Brien. “That was a match between two guys with the same type of talent and strength’s, but unfortunately for Sal (Mech) got the last takedown and that was pretty much it.”

It became a worst-case scenario for Lake County on the second day of the wrestling state tournament on Friday.
