  • Batavia romps to UEC River crown Jan 15, 2015 11:01 PM
The pageantry was elevated to a new level when the Doranski brothers took the mat at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre Thursday night. The Batavia wrestlers needed all of 51 combined seconds to secure back-to-back falls. The Bulldogs’ showdown with archrival Geneva never came to fruition as the siblings’ consecutive pins at 113 and 120 pounds nearly equaled the entire Viking output.

  • Woods helps Crystal Lake South edge Cary-Grove Jan 15, 2015 10:24 PM
Just about this time last year, Crystal Lake South was putting the finishing touches on a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division title before making a serious run at an overall conference championship along with Cary-Grove. But what a difference a year makes. Heavy graduation losses combined with injuries have place both fine wrestling clubs in the middle of the conference pack this season, making Thursday night’s dual on the Gators’ home floor not quite the marquee matchup it would have been a year ago. With that said, the teams still put on an exciting show, giving a big senior night audience its share of thrills right up until the very end, when Frank Woods brought the Crystal Lake South crowd to its feet with a 9-4 decision in the final bout to give the Gators a 35-34 victory.

  • Shoemaker’s fortitude lifts Jacobs over Huntley Jan 15, 2015 11:17 PM
The stipulation read that if the Jacobs wrestling team locked in a win or was too far behind prior to its final match against rival Huntley, 220-pound Carson Shoemaker was going to take a back seat for health precautions. Shoemaker’s skin infection wasn’t a major concern heading into Thursday’s night’s dual as it cleared up prior to the meet but it did provide some hesitation. A doctor’s note however gave the Golden Eagles a major fail-safe and when Shoemaker’s name was called to defend Jacobs’ 36-28 Fox Valley Conference win in the nightcap after the Red Raiders made it close, the senior didn’t hesitate.

From the early stages of the wrestling campaign, coach Terry Wilkinson’s Hampshire club has been off and running, finishing strong in each tournament it has attended while already surpassing its 14-win season from a year ago. On Wednesday, Anton Krocko and his teammates extended the good vibe, treating a senior night crowd to victories over visitors Elmwood Park and Elgin as the Whips improved to 15-5. Hampshire overwhelmed an undermanned Elmwood Park 60-15 before finishing with a 46-18 triumph over Elgin. The Maroons went 1-1 on the night after defeating Elmwood Park 48-12 in the first matchup of the evening.

  • St. Charles East on schedule, wins at Maine West Jan 10, 2015 8:20 PM
If St. Charles East hopes to repeat as Upstate Eight champs in a couple of weeks, it’s important that Jason Potter’s club is at full strength and in form when his Saints go to host Geneva to defend their crown. Consider that plan very much on track. On Saturday afternoon in Des Plaines, the Saints showed they are well equipped to lift another conference trophy by sweeping all three of their duals at Maine West, including an opener with Northern Illinois power DeKalb (14-4-0) with a thrilling 32-29 comeback victory. The Saints later bounced both Rolling Meadows (13-4-0) and the host Warriors to run their overall record to 13-4-0.

  • Conant takes command at Leyden Jan 10, 2015 9:15 PM
By the time it was Bobby Alexander’s turn in the spotlight, the Conant star had already watched a trio of teammates before him seal the Cougars’ fourth consecutive Leyden Invite crown, allowing the standout 138-pounder to focus solely on winning his own fourth straight title as well. And after Alexander’s strong performance over Mousa Jodeh of Oak Forest, the Cougars had built an insurmountable 50-point lead over the powerful Class 2A Oak Forest contingent before running up the final score with three more individual titles to lift the crown going away with 262.5 points.

  • Dundee-Crown’s Brunner dominates at Geneva Jan 10, 2015 10:43 PM
Christian Brunner has a simple plan for the remainder of the wrestling season. “My goal is to be undefeated and a state champion,” the Dundee-Crown junior said on Saturday afternoon after dominating the 195-pound class of the 36th Annual Newbill Invitational at Geneva Saturday afternoon. The Chargers’ standout, the reigning Class 3A state runner-up at 182 pounds, terminated his championship match against Geneva senior Austin Chaon with his third near-fall late in the final period to secure a technical fall.

  • Mixed messages at Round Lake triple-dual Jan 10, 2015 9:42 PM
An array of teams competing in Round Lake’s triple-dual wrestling meet provided mixed results Saturday. Forced to forfeit five matches in every dual meet, the host Panthers went 0-3, despite being competitive in a pair of matches. They fell 36-30 loss to Lake Forest (6-8) to open the day and close out with a 39-30 defeat to Mishicot, Wis., (9-3). Round Lake (8-11) also fell 48-26 to Johnsburg (13-11). The Skyhawks were the only team to post a 3-0 record. St. Viator (13-7-1) had a strong day, as the Lions opened the day with a 36-34 victory over Lake Forest, before defeating Mishicot 45-27 in round two.

Metea Valley’s 195-pounder David Rojas was tired, and who wouldn’t be while battling extra periods of a tight wrestling match. Heck, the long bout was exhausting on the fans and the coaches.

  • Preissing, Prospect press past Rolling Meadows Jan 9, 2015 10:44 PM
Alex Preissing helped Prospect get off to a flying start before teammates Tanner Strobel and Matt and Adrian Wroblewski provided the knock-out punch to send the host Knights to a convincing 43-18 wrestling victory over Rolling Meadows on Friday night at the Jean Walker Field House. Preissing (120 pounds) gave the big crowd plenty to cheer when he recorded a fall at 3:36 to cap an impressive performance in the opening bout of this Mid-Suburban East showdown. After hard-fought victories from Chris Rivera, Alex Straczak, Frank Mazur and Stu Isteffanos helped the hosts build a comfortable 18-0 advantage, the aforementioned middle of the Knights’ lineup went to work. And it sure made a big splash, with one fall and a pair of technical falls.

After getting postponed against Warren on Thursday night, visiting Mundelein and Vernon Hills squared off in a rare North Suburban Conference wrestling dual meet to open the 2015 part of their season Friday night. Starting the meet at 145 pounds, the Mustangs kept it close with the Cougars in a 12-12 deadlock after four matches. But Vernon Hills (13-7) took command of the meet after that point with its upper weights really doing some damage en route to an impressive 52-24 NSC crossover victory over Mundelein (5-10).
