  • Jacobs flexes muscles at mega quad Dec 6, 2014 9:55 PM
When he was a freshman, Cody Ferencz endured a 7-win season — with the prospects of ever reaching double-digit victories in his career at Jacobs looking dim. After sweeping all three duals Saturday at Glenbard West, Ferencz and his teammates have propelled the Golden Eagles’ overall record to a dazzling 7-0 — and the prospects are looking up for even bigger and better things. The Eagles had far too much firepower for Bartlett, Joliet West and the host and were the best of the five clubs competing at the annual Hilltopper Mega Quad in Glen Ellyn, setting up an important Fox Valley Conference dual meet Thursday at McHenry. The Hilltoppers went 2-2, while Joilet West ended 2-1. Hersey, with heavyweight and 2014 state qualifier Tyler Cooke sidelined by the flu, finished 1-2. A shorthanded Bartlett was 0-3.

  • Wheaton Warrenville South perfect at St. Charles East Dec 7, 2014 12:00 AM
Karl Fowler had only one thing on his mind. “I was thinking we had a big rivalry with Naperville (Central),” the West Aurora heavyweight wrestler said. “Now that we left the DVC we don’t get to face them. I really wanted to take that kid down.” The Blackhawks trailed their former DuPage Valley Conference rival 29-27 at the St. Charles East Mega Duals Saturday afternoon.

  • Not one, not two — but three teams dazzle at Grant Dec 6, 2014 9:58 PM
Saturday’s Grant triple-dual meet was a pretty good example of what really competitive wrestling is all about. Unlike pretty much every other season when one team has walked away with a perfect 3-0 record on the day, this year three teams — the host Bulldogs, Stevenson and Barrington had to settle for going 2-1 in this annual showdown.

  • Wrestling: Stevenson jumps out to an NSC Lake win Dec 5, 2014 1:01 AM
Visiting Stevenson couldn’t have asked for a much better start to its North Suburban Conference wrestling season Thursday night at Mundelein. Starting at 170 pounds, the Patriots (3-0, 1-0) quickly jumped ahead of their long-time rivals 15-0 after three matches and they never looked back after that point in rolling to an impressive 51-14 NSC Lake Division victory over the Mustangs.

  • Powerhouse Libertyville picks up right where Wildcats left off Dec 5, 2014 10:42 PM
There were a lot of new faces in the lineup, but the result was familiar for the Libertyville wrestling team Friday night at Warren. The Wildcats (1-1, 1-0) proved that despite losing five state qualifiers to graduation last season they still have some pretty good firepower in their lineup, jumping out to a commanding 27-0 lead over the Blue Devils after the first six matches of this North Suburban Conference dual meet. Warren (3-2, 0-1) did cut the lead to 27-10, but the Wildcats came through with some crucial victories to pull away with a 43-13 NSC Lake Division victory.

  • Fremd’s firepower too much for slow-starting Palatine Dec 5, 2014 9:43 PM
Host Fremd started fast and finished off cross-town rival Palatine early en route to a 44-27 victory in a Mid-Suburban League West Division wrestling dual Friday night. The Vikings’ trio of Grant Barwacz (132), Dom Lorig (138) and Trevor Kristo (145) showed the way by opening the proceedings with a pair of falls and a tech-fall (Kristo) to fuel a 17-0 advantage, and Dan Collins’ Pirates suffered their third consecutive loss.

  • Suchyta, St. Viator bounce back Dec 2, 2014 10:13 PM
Fresh off his individual championship last weekend at the wrestling invitational hosted by Guerin, senior Brandon Suchyta led a late St. Viator charge to defeat Loyola Academy and give the Lions a clean sweep of two other foes Tuesday night in Arlington Heights. Suchyta’s pin at 2:22 in the final bout of the evening gave the hosts a 42-37 win over the Ramblers to even the Lions’ record at 3-3-0. That helped ease the sting of a tough start for Jason Churak’s team, which travels to South Elgin this weekend for its biggest test to date.

Lyons Township used a big finish in the afternoon sessions to outscore runner-up Lincoln-Way Central (208.5-185) and Yorkville (159).

  • Coronado, Grant step forward at Barrington Nov 29, 2014 8:06 PM
There were a lot of positives for Lake County teams and individuals Saturday at the 24th Annual Moore/Prettyman Wrestling Invitational in Barrington. Lyons Township rolled to the championship of the powerful 25-team meet with 208.5 points with Lincoln-Way Central (185) in second as the Lions showed great depth up and down their lineup. The battle for third place was a close one, as Yorkville (159 points) held off fourth-place Prospect (157.5) and fifth-place Grant (153.5). Grant’s effort was led by 138-pound senior Cristian Coronado (5-0), who posted an 11-6 decision over Plainfield Central’s Clayton Ledbetter for the championship.
