    Special Olympics Illinois is proud to introduce a brand new fundraising initiative taking place on Sept. 28 at Six Flags Great America called The 2014 Coaster Challenge. Participants simply register, fundraise and ride the distance of a 5K, 10K or marathon (26.2 miles) on Six Flags Great America's world-class roller coasters.

    The 2014 Cook of the Week Challenge gets underway today as we reveal the 16 suburban cooks who will battle it out for the title Cook of the Year. Over the next two months, these folks will compete in one-on-one recipe contests that challenge them to use the same “mystery ingredients” to create an entree and at least one side dish or a one-pot meal. The cook with the winning recipe will advance to the next round. The four left standing will compete in a live cook-off, where the winner will be crowned Cook of the Year.

    Chicago-based Northwestern Memorial HealthCare will complete its merger with Winfield-based Cadence Health on Sept. 1, the two health care agencies announced Wednesday. The merger will expand Northwestern’s brand to Cadence’s Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield and Delnor Hospital in Geneva. Northwestern operates Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Forest.

    A private room at Cooper’s Corner in Winfield was filled Friday afternoon with guests attending a big birthday party. The celebration wasn’t just for one person though — it was for more than two dozen graduates of Glenbard West High School’s class of 1952, who are all turning, or have already turned, 80 this year. “We have a good camaraderie in our class,” said John Tobey of Lombard, one of the former Hilltoppers who helped organize the event. “It’s neat to keep up with their goings and their comings.”

Ibrahim, who was under a state death sentence for the past year for her conversion to Christianity, and who was forced to bear a child in a Sudanese prison, showed calm in the face of daunting circumstances.
