His presentation, “Death by Food: How the American Diet is Killing You," will analyze the reasons the American diet is so high in fat, sugar and salts, the connection between processed foods and rising health problems, and offer a means of optimal nutrition as a solution to the nutrient-depleted foods found on the tables of American consumers.

    Winning a Food Network show wasn’t enough to save Taco in a Bag at Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee from closing, but its owners say they are working on opening a new spot in Chicago. “When people go to a mall, people want something that they are used to — a big slice of pizza, a pretzel. Something new, or a light twist on gourmet doesn’t have a place there,” co-owner Tim Brown said.

    The Taylor Family YMCA, 50 N. McLean Blvd. in Elgin, will offer a session of “Livestrong at the YMCA,” a free, 12-week recovery program for adult cancer patients and survivors. Registration is currently open for the session that will begin on March 2. Class sessions are available Monday and Thursday from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Class size is small (8-12) to provide individualized attention; and therefore space is limited.

    Families struggling just to make ends meet shouldn’t have to pay to get their tax refund, and, in Illinois, they don’t — thanks to a partnership with the Center for Economic Progress, United Way of Elgin, the Grand Victoria Foundation, and Gail Borden Public Library. This tax season, the center will again make filing taxes easier by bringing its free tax preparation service to the Elgin community.
