  • Waukegan police make arrests in recent burglaries Jul 22, 2014 6:15 PM
    Two Waukegan 18-year-olds have been charged in a burglary on the city’s west side. Quinton Crider of the 1900 block of North Lewis Avenue was charged with five counts of residential burglary, one count of attempted robbery and one count of resisting a police officer, according to a news release. Jaquan S. Anderson of the 1700 block of Golf Road was charged with one count of residential burglary and one count of resisting a police officer.

    Kids 1st Health Fair, which has provided free immunizations and other health services to low-income Lake County children since 1993, is evolving in response to new federal guidelines. While school-aged children will receive the usual immunizations and screenings at the fair, to be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 6 at Miguel Juarez Middle School, 201 N. Butrick St. in Waukegan, organizers will assist all parents and legal guardians in transitioning to medical homes to seek routine preventative care and treatment in the future.

    A 33-year-old homeless man is charged with breaking into a woman’s Waukegan home and touching her while she slept, authorities said. Police say Lliau Moreno-Tepecha broke into an apartment through an unlocked door about 7 a.m. Sunday on the 2600 block of Cornelia Street.

  • Coroner: Waukegan cop’s blood-alcohol was 0.282 in fatal crash Jul 18, 2014 8:23 PM
    The Lake County coroner’s office says a Waukegan police officer killed in a crash last weekend had a blood-alcohol level more than 3½ times the legal limit, the Waukegan News-Sun reports. Deputy Chief Coroner Orlando Portillo says 27-year-old Jason Mueller had a blood-alcohol level of 0.282 after the single-car crash about 2:30 a.m. July 12.

    A mosquito pool (or batch of mosquitoes) sampled July 8th in Deerfield has tested positive for West Nile virus. The mosquito pool is the first confirmed indicator of the disease’s presence in Lake County in 2014. In 2013, five human cases, 2 birds, and 41 mosquito pools tested positive for the virus in the county.

     
  • Coroner’s office: Alcohol played role in cop’s death in Gurnee crash Jul 15, 2014 5:19 PM
    A Waukegan police officer exceeded the legal blood-alcohol limit when he died in an off-duty, single-vehicle crash in Gurnee last weekend, according to the Lake County coroner’s office. Jason J. Mueller, 27, of Grayslake, died after the wreck early Saturday, July 12. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

     
  • Woman pleads guilty to torture, murder of Waukegan man Jul 15, 2014 5:57 PM
    A Waukegan woman accused of helping torture and kill a man in a Waukegan body shop in 2011 pleaded guilty Tuesday to murder. Nadia Palacios will be sentenced to 20 to 60 years in prison for assisting in the murder of David Campbell of Waukegan.
