Focus on school safety at Gurnee districts 56 and 50 Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Safety and security are at the forefront at two Gurnee school districts this week. Nationally known school security expert Kenneth Trump was scheduled to examine buildings at Woodland Elementary District 50 on Monday and Tuesday. Trump will do a security audit at Gurnee Elementary District 56 on Wednesday and Thursday.

Host Lake Forest (286) edged Stevenson (283) in the team standings, meaning those teams share the overall conference championship.

Flying under the radar last season as teammate Shakhiem Chapman enjoyed most of the spoils on his way to a third-place state finish, Warren’s Danny Hicks had a wonderful year himself in 2012. It’s looking like 2013 might be even better for Hicks after Saturday’s result at the Class 3A Barrington sectional. The senior won his second consecutive sectional title, this one coming at the expense of Libertyville junior Austin Koziol (28-11) in a 5-0 decision to send the star 170-pounder into the state tournament next weekend with a full head of steam.

Carmel Catholic’s Lauren Feely is looking forward to next week’s state gymnastics meet at Palatine, but it won’t be the same this year. Feely chalked up the all-around championship with a 38.175 Thursday night in the Stevenson sectional. She also flew to top honors on vault (9.85) and floor exercise (9.65), while placing third on uneven parallel bars (9.5) and fourth on beam (9.175).

Augustana's Sarahbeth Jones was named a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week. Jones, a senior from Wadsworth and graduate of Warren High School, set a school record in the 3,000-meter run during the Olivet Nazarene Invitational. Her time of 10:14.66 beat the previous school record of 10:15.27 by Susan Paige in 1999.

If you expected the unexpected Saturday, your expectations were certainly realized. Both the Lake Zurich and Grayslake North girls bowling teams earned spots for the first time in school history in the IHSA state tournament to be held Friday and Saturday at Cherry Bowl in Rockford. Lake Zurich rolled to its first-ever sectional title by posting 5,244 pins, and Grayslake North finished runner-up with 5,206 just ahead of Marengo (5,198) and host Warren (5,159) at the IHSA Warren sectional at Bertrand Lanes in Waukegan.

What a difference a week made for the Grant wrestling team. The host Bulldogs came through big-time Saturday in their own Class 3A regional, as they overcame a 23-point deficit against archrival Libertyville to take a 168-162 lead over the Wildcats heading into the final round of the nine-team meet. And while Grant had only six wrestlers battling for first-place medals to nine for Libertyville, the Bulldogs still managed to win the regional championship going away by a 197-176 margin.

Millburn Elementary District 24 voters will decide a referendum question asking for permission to allow a larger-than-usual property tax increase just for next year. District 24’s measure is one of 13 referendum questions that’ll be on Lake County ballots April 9. A majority of the questions pertain to whether local governments should be allowed to seek cheaper electricity for residents and small businesses.
