  • Lake Zurich’s Olivia Schneider pitches against Warren in Gurnee on Friday.

Schneider’s heroic effort lifts Lake Zurich May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
Lake Zurich junior Olivia Schneider, a little lefty if there ever was one, has no lofty expectations. "I'm little," Schneider, who stands 5 feet, 1 inch, said with a laugh. "Not growing anymore." Funny, as Friday's North Suburban Conference Lake Division game between Lake Zurich and host Warren moved from one inning to the next, Schneider seemed to be getting bigger and bigger. Her presence in the circle was growing, Incredible Hulk-ishly. "It was really hard to get the pitcher down," Warren junior left fielder Jazmin Bonke said. "She had a lot of movement." Schneider retired the first 17 batters she faced, before Bonke singled with two out in the sixth to spoil the perfect game, in what was maybe her best pitched game in high school. She settled for a 4-hitter, as Lake Zurich held on for a 3-2 win, delivering Warren a crushing loss in its attempt to successfully defend its NSC Lake title.

  • Lakes’ Caleb Arnwine competes in the triple jump during the North Suburban Conference boys track meet Thursday at Libertyville High School

    Grant’s repeat plan succeeds May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
It started in the field and ended up on the track, and that's the formula that led to another conference championship for Grant. It was that formula that the Bulldogs and their coaches met about back in November, and every week since — not losing focus on the ultimate goal, another North Suburban Conference title. Thursday night, on a cool and very soggy night at Libertyville, the Bulldogs, who shared the conference title with Lake Zurich a year ago, showed their dominance in all facets to win their second consecutive NSC crown. Grant, which also captured the NSC Prairie Division title, amassed 115 points to 96 for runner-up Lakes.
