  • Dennis Kostidis of Fremd competes in the 100-yard butterfly during the boys swimming state meet prelimiinaries at New Trier High School on Friday.

Ujiiye, Barrington stay busy at state meet Feb 22, 2013 12:00 AM
Barrington senior Kyle Ujiiye might be a little bit tired, but he certainly isn't bored. He'll be facing a very busy day of competition in Saturday boys swimming and diving state meet finals after advancing to the championship heat of the 100-yard butterfly and taking legs of all three Barrington relays, which will compete in the consolation heats as the finals session begins at 1 p.m at New Trier High School. "It looks like I'll have another full meet program," he said, "and I wouldn't want it any other way."

  • David Chokron swims the breast stoke leg of the 200-yard medley relay for St. Charles North at sectionals last Saturday.

    St. Charles N. aims for top-five finish Feb 21, 2013 12:00 AM
It is far too simplistic to say that the state meet, which takes place this weekend at New Trier, is the only meet that matters in boys swimming. But it is the meet for which all the work is aimed. Swimmers have been churning yards in practice, keeping training logs, writing down and memorizing goal times — all with this weekend in mind. The regular season does matter — and for swimmers who have not qualified for the meet that begins with today's prelims and concludes with Saturday's finals — the next regular season is vitally important. But all eyes point to one weekend in February, when the state's fastest put on their fastest suits, shave their heads and get ready to propel themselves toward state glory. All three of the top area teams — St. Charles North, St. Charles East and Marmion — have strong representation at this weekend's meet. If none of them have aspirations of lifting the state title, that's perhaps a measure of how strong New Trier's team is. But there are still plenty left to achieve.

  • Conant’s Jonathon Burke has a word with coach Brian Drenth after cooling down following his MSL-winning effort in the 500 freestyle at Barrington.

Conant’s Burke pleased with pole position for 500 Feb 21, 2013 12:00 AM
There are no points awarded for being the top qualifier in any event for this weekend's boys swimming state championships at New Trier. But there are certain perks to gaining such a distinction, and Conant senior Jonathon Burke is enjoying them. Burke had the fastest effort in last week's sectionals in the 500-yard freestyle, which means in Friday's state qualifying heats, he'll have a center lane in the final heat.

  • Strittmatter humbled by latest honor Feb 21, 2013 12:00 AM
Zach Strittmatter said 45-minute naps are the key. How else could the Batavia senior have the time to do all he does, at such a high level?

  • George LeClaire/gleclaire@dailyherald.com South Elgin’s Nicholas Hasemann wins the 200-yard freestyle at the sectional swim meet at St. Charles East on Saturday.

South Elgin’s Hasemann ready for final state meet Feb 21, 2013 12:00 AM
For South Elgin senior boys swimmer Nick Hasemann, it's all about the physics. Hasemann, who placed fourth in the state last year in the backstroke, has worked hard at perfecting his underwater technique this year. "I've improved my under-waters," he said. "My technique is better. I'm doing a lot of strength work and I should be able to pull a lot more water and move faster through the water. I have the ability to pull more water and my core strength helps keep my body in line instead of all over the place. If you travel in a straight line you will travel faster through the water." Hasemann is back at the state for the fourth and final time this weekend at New Trier High School. He'll swim the backstroke and 200.

  • Stevenson senior James Lichtenstein takes the plunge in today’s diving state preliminaries at New Trier. He’ll be joined by sophomore teammate Blake Ripes, who won the sectional meet Saturday at Vernon Hills.

Barrowclift gets his chance at state Feb 20, 2013 12:00 AM
As a freshman spectator at the boys state swimming meet years ago, St. Francis' Michael Barrowclift experienced the energy pouring from the stands. He laid out a future goal.

  • If everything goes well for Barrington senior Jack Strauss, he could score in four events at this weekend’s boys swimming state meet at New Trier.

Strauss, Ujiye set winning tone for Barrington Feb 20, 2013 12:00 AM
For a Barrington team with an opportunity to score a nice chunk of points in this weekend's boys swimming and diving state championship at New Trier, it's fitting that the effort is being led by the team's top two swimmers. Senior team co-captains Jack Strauss and Kyle Ujiye are poised to score points in their individual races, but the thrust all season for the Broncos has been how to score points collectively. And that's where Strauss and Ujiye figure so prominently.

  • Wheaton makes sure there’s no repeat Feb 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Not again this year. That was what the members of the Wheaton co-op 400-yard freestyle relay team thought entering Saturday’s swimming sectional at Lyons Township. After just missing the state cut at last year’s meet, the swimmers were determined to qualify this time around and qualify in style. The Wheaton quartet of J.T. Simoneau, Max St. George, Matt Rogers and James Hasbrouck did just that, blazing to a first-place time of 3:11.28 that is more than 3.5 seconds under the qualifying standard.

  • Conant performs at Glenbrook North Feb 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Conant excelled in Saturday’s boys swimming sectional meet hosted by Glenbrook North, finishing second in the team standings with 177 points, close behind the Spartans (185) and just ahead of Maine South (167). The Cougars qualified both freestyle relays to the state meet and can look forward to two individuals swims each for senior Jonathan Burke and juniors Martin Pozniak and Alex Shozda.

It’s in the air: Fast swims at Barrington Feb 16, 2013 12:00 AM
The rubdown tables were out and the faint scent of wintergreen permeated the air inside Barrington’s natatorium on Saturday, as sure a sign as any that it is time to swim fast. And the swimmers sure took the hint at the Barrington sectional. The host Broncos led the way, qualifying winning all three relays in times well below the standard required to race in Friday’s state preliminaries at New Trier. They were the class of the field in the team standings with 272 points, ahead of Stevenson (212), Fremd (172), Cary-Grove (158), Hoffman Estates (111) and Jacobs (98).

  • Groovy: Winning rhythms at Vernon Hills Feb 16, 2013 12:00 AM
The Black Eyed Peas’ still-cool, blood-pumping “I Gotta Feeling” blared during a break in the Vernon Hills boys swimming and diving sectional. The tune, however, seemed superfluous. Super swimming sufficed. “We don’t need no music for this,” said a smiling Libertyville junior Bobby Snader, standing poolside after he and teammates Justin Fu, Atticus Rush and Eric Boynton ripped off a 1:26.94 to win the 200 free relay.

  • South Elgin’s Alex Duffy placed second in the 200-yard individual melody at the sectional swim meet at St. Charles East on Saturday.

Hasemann leads 3 South Elgin swimmers to state Feb 16, 2013 12:00 AM
South Elgin’s had boys swimmers qualify for the state meet before, but for the first time, the Storm will be sending three swimmers to the final meet of the season. South Elgin qualified Nick Hasemann, who won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke at Saturday’s St. Charles East sectional. Also making the trip is Alex Duffy, who qualified in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly and Taylor Headley, making his first trip to the state meet after qualifying in the 100 butterfly.

  • West Chicago’s Eichenberger has one goal left on list Feb 16, 2013 12:00 AM

  • St. Charles North’s Josh Clay swims the 200-yard individual melody at the sectional swim meet at St. Charles East on Saturday.

St. Charles North notches another sectional title Feb 16, 2013 12:00 AM
It was very hard to find frowns among St. Charles’ star swimmers following Saturday’s sectional meet at St Charles East. Sure there were some who wished they had qualified — but whether from the host Saints to meet winning St. Charles North, there was a lot of happiness and excitement over the cast of athletes who booked their trips to next week’s IHSA state meet at New Trier. St. Charles North, which defeated its crosstown rival 385-364 for the team title, qualified all three relays and an additional seven individual entries. The Saints send two relays and seven individual entries to New Trier.

Waubonsie Valley eager for sectional Feb 13, 2013 12:00 AM
This has been a glorious season thus far for the Waubonsie Valley boys swimming and diving team, but now it’s crunch time. The Warriors are one of the premier teams in this weekend’s Neuqua Valley sectional, considered by many the toughest sectional in the state. Besides the Warriors the sectional lineup includes top local teams such as the host Wildcats, Naperville North and Naperville Central.
