Jacobs’ Reinbrecht pumped for state meetFeb 26, 2014 12:00 AM
Jacobs senior Alex Reinbrecht is doing less thinking these days. And it’s made all the difference in the world. Reinbrecht, part of the District 300 co-op boys swimming team, adjusted his mental approach in the pool. “I’m definitely much more relaxed when I race now,” he said. “For me it’s made quite a significant difference. I swim all types of races and think a lot about them. When I start thinking too much about what I’m doing, I don’t do as well. If I relax and don’t think about things, I swim quite well.”

Naperville Central’s Jimmy Fox seemed to come out of nowhere to capture the 500 freestyle at the Metea Valley swimming and diving sectional on Saturday. • Lake Park edges Wheaton for thirdFeb 22, 2014 12:00 AM
It was a battle until the end for third place between Lake Park and Wheaton co-op Saturday at the Downers Grove North boys swimming sectional. The Lancers’ prevailed by one-half point, 182 to 181.5, thanks to their victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the day. However, team results in sectional competition don’t have the weight that the actual number of state qualifiers a school has achieved has. A sectional meet is all about being good enough and fast enough to keep your season going another week.

The Lake Forest sectional not only brought in powerhouse Libertyville but also swimmers who don’t have a home pool to their name, from schools such as Antioch, Carmel and the two Grayslakes. And those so-called lonely swimmers certainly contended. Libertyville prevailed as a group and will send most of its team to the state meet in Evanston next weekend. The team scores found the Cats up front with 294, while Lake Forest was second (275.50) and surprising Warren was third (203).

Winning a single event in a boys swimming sectional like the one at Glenbrook North on Saturday is remarkable enough. Doing it twice is doubly impressive. And doing it in the specific way Elk Grove junior Colin Williams did it is almost unheard of.

  • Barrington ties down sectional titleFeb 22, 2014 12:00 AM
Barrington seniors Sam Miseyka and Sebastian Piekarski have been trading off victories and best times all season in one of their strongest races, the 50-yard freestyle. “It almost seems like we’ve been going back and forth — he’ll win one, I’ll win one,” said Miseyka. On Saturday in the boys swimming sectional at Stevenson, they tried a new approach. This time they shared a victory, touching in 21.55 to tie for top honors in the 50 free in lifetime best efforts for both. One more thing they shared: A joyous dunking after the meet as Barrington celebrated a sectional championship. Barrington won the 200 medley and 200 free relays and had plenty more individual state qualifiers in totaling 260 points. Stevenson was close behind (243), with Fremd (169), Palatine (143), Jacobs (109) and Cary-Grove (95) rounding out the top six.

With only 11 swimmers and without a superstar, Cary-Grove boys swimming coach Rick Schaefer realized it would take a team effort for the Trojans to claim top honors at Saturday’s Fox Valley Conference Invitational hosted by Woodstock North. Mission accomplished. Spearheaded by a first-place effort by Adam Eibel in the 200-yard intermediate, the Trojans, who host the District 155 co-op team that includes athletes from Prairie Ridge, Crystal Lake Central and Crystal Lake South, were champions of the conference with a score of 283.
