  • Schauble’s return to Palatine triumphant Dec 5, 2014 10:42 PM
You’ll have to forgive John Schauble if he looked a bit tired Friday evening. He had been up most of the previous night pondering his return as coach of the Palatine boys swimming and diving team. See, the last time he coached the Pirates was 1990. Since then, he served as Aquatics Director and physical education teacher at Stevenson, where he founded the Patriot Aquatic Club. But life is often cyclical, and there was Schauble on deck at the Palatine pool Friday, watching with a satisfaction as his charges roared to a convincing 118-67 victory over Buffalo Grove in a Mid-Suburban League crossover meet.

  • MSL East stars continue their ascent Dec 4, 2014 9:23 PM
Barrington’s boys swimming program has been exceptionally strong in recent years, consistently producing both top-end standouts such as Kyle Ujiiye, Jack Strauss and Sebastian Piekarski along with depth and lineup completeness few in the Mid-Suburban League have been able to match. And traditionally, the MSL West has clearly been the stronger of the conference’s two divisions. This year, though, beware the Beasts of the East.

Here's a team-by-team look at what to expect from boys swimming in the Mid-Suburban League and at St. Viator this season.

  • Current events, and Schauble, bode well for Palatine Dec 3, 2014 1:49 PM
John Schauble's return to Palatine High School to coach the boys swimming team is a homecoming of sorts, both for him and anyone interested in the aquatic arts.

  • True to form, Mundelein’s Falconer returns to finals Nov 22, 2014 1:01 AM
False starts can be a little unnerving. Unless you’re Mundelein senior Erin Falconer. After four false starts in her heat of the 200-yard freestyle Friday due to malfunctioning equipment for the starter, Falconer shook off the distraction and wound up victorious with a time of 1:48.83. That was good enough for the top spot heading into Saturday’s finale of the state swimming and diving finals at Evanston, which begins at noon.

  • Rosary reclaims elite status Nov 22, 2014 10:04 PM
After Friday’s girls swimming prelims, Rosary’s team had a brief scare on the way home when their team bus caught fire. No one was hurt, the Beads were nearly home, and all that was left was the possibility of “we’re on fire” quips during Saturday’s finals at Evanston.

  • Picture this: Prospect’s Liva dives to state title Nov 22, 2014 8:53 PM
When it counted most, in the diving state finals at Evanston on Saturday afternoon, Prospect senior Dan Liva was first again. After taking a significant lead through the first eight rounds Friday, the four-time Mid-Suburban League champion completed her run to a state championship with three more strong dives.

  • Filipek, Bartlett-Streamwood dent the state scoreboard Nov 22, 2014 8:14 PM
For Bartlett-Streamwood coach Jeremy Meserole, it was definitely a case of the glass being half-full. Sabrehawks sophomore Kayla Filipek earned a pair of races in the championship session of the girls swimming and diving state meet on Saturday at Evanston Township High School, breaking new ground for the program with two point-scoring performances.

  • Barrington’s Jacobsen does it again; Fremd finishes sixth Nov 22, 2014 8:12 PM
Barrington junior Kirsten Jacobsen made a tactical adjustment in the championship heat of the 500-yard freestyle during Saturday’s girls swimming and diving finals at Evanston Township High School. The two-time defending champ had previously won by making her move relatively late in the race, pulling away decisively over the last handful of laps. This time, the race was essentially over as soon as it started. Jacobsen got separation immediately from the rest of the heat and comfortably protected her lead the whole way to win the event for a third straight time.

  • Fond finishes for Mundelein’s Falconer, Kordik Nov 22, 2014 9:14 PM
Winning medals is always nice. It goes a little deeper than that, though, for the Mundelein girls swimming team. “Years from now no one will remember if you won or what place you took,” said senior Erin Falconer, who capped a brilliant career by qualifying individually for state in the 100 and 200 freestyle all four years. “The main thing I’m going to remember is having fun and the camaraderie we have on this team. That’s what I’ll miss the most.” Falconer, along with fellow seniors Rachel Robb, Jennifer Kordik, Aijan Urmat, and Lauren Blake have certainly all helped keep Mundelein swimming on the map, especially after their performance this weekend at girls swimming and diving state finals at Evanston Township High School.

  • Rosary puts itself in prime position Nov 21, 2014 11:23 PM
One of the great truisms about any IHSA state swim meet is that while no one officially wins the meet from Friday’s prelims, every team that has ever won has done so on the basis of the strength of its Friday performance.
