All things considered it was a pretty good day on the diving board for Naperville North’s Thomas Petersen. The Huskies senior, who has been fighting a bad strain of the flu, was strong enough Saturday to finish 10th with a score of 405.60 against top-flight competition at the Hinsdale Central Diving Meet, which is billed as a mini-state meet.

  • Bartlett/Streamwood swims strong in Coleman’s honor Jan 17, 2015 6:29 PM
The Mike Coleman Memorial Invitational isn’t just another meet on the schedule for the Bartlett/Streamwood co-op boys swim team. Sure, it was a home meet, but there’s a lot more to it for the Sabrehawks. Its namesake was a former team MVP and record holder in the 200-yard medley relay and 200 free relay, who passed away in 2011. That’s why the past couple of weeks of training were dedicated solely to racing well against a slate of formidable competition. That the Sabrehawks did, finishing fourth with 63 points, behind repeat champion Plainfield, which won eight of the 10 events and finished with 155 points.

  • Rolling Meadows times it right at Buffalo Grove Jan 17, 2015 12:50 AM
It’s safe to say Rolling Meadows very much enjoyed its first visit to Buffalo Grove’s new pool, where the Mustangs claimed a 135-50 victory Friday to remain undefeated in Mid-Suburban East boys swimming. The standout efforts for Meadows included a 59.30 in the 100-yard breaststroke from senior Jake Barson, along with a 2:02.56 in the 200 IM.

  • Hersey hangs on against Wheeling Jan 16, 2015 10:15 PM
It’s getting to be that point of the boys swim season where practices are painfully grueling, every point in a dual meet is hotly contested and winning is more of a relief than a celebration. Consider Hersey and coach Dick Mortensen quite relieved. The Huskies escaped with a 95-91 victory over host Wheeling on Friday afternoon, getting just enough out of the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, to improve to 6-2 in dual meets this season.

  • Andresen likes the progress D300 co-op is making Jan 14, 2015 9:48 PM
While the District 300 (Dundee-Crown, Hampshire, Jacobs) boys swimming team didn’t register a victory in a recent meet against the District 155 co-op team, coach Rick Andresen saw plenty of progress that has him optimistic about what lies ahead. “We had a good meet,” he said. “We saw a lot of encouraging things and we saw some things that need work. We are getting better, but we need to tighten some things. The times we swam were very respectable. We had nice time drops in some events. All of the hard work we did during the holiday break might be paying off. I’m pleased overall, especially with the improvement of our younger kids.”

  • Full speed ahead for Meadows in victory at Hoffman Estates Jan 9, 2015 9:53 PM
There was no rust, nary a post-holiday letdown for the Rolling Meadows boys swim team Friday afternoon. The Mustangs, on the road after the Mid-Suburban League winter break, defeated host Hoffman Estates 99-67 to improve 3-1 in dual meets this season. Sure, the main headline-makers were at top form, like senior Jake Barson, who won the 200-meter individual medley (2:21.26) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.03). Freshman Jake Dellorto did likewise in the 200 freestyle (2:04.65) and 400 freestyle (4:30.72). The pair also helped the Mustangs end the meet with a bang by winning the 400 free relay with teammates David Myers and Filip Pancerz, in 3:52.19. But Meadows showed its depth with strong efforts from its third swimmers, allowing it to take the top three places in six events, and finish 1-2-3 in two of them.

  • Rolling Meadows, Prospect take their best shot at unity Jan 7, 2015 7:04 PM
The Rolling Meadows and Prospect boys swimming teams expect to battle it out for real in a key Mid-Suburban East meet on Jan. 23. But out of mutual respect, general competitiveness and a willingness to play hard away from the pool, the Mustangs and Knights staged a warm-up of sorts last Saturday. Athletes and coaches from both programs met for pizza, then headed over to Southpoint Mall in Arlington Heights for several spirited rounds of laser tag. The idea originated with Rolling Meadows coach Monika Chiappetta, who’s been impressed with the good sportsmanship and general good behavior from both her own team and Prospect. Many of the swimmers know one another from competing on the same club teams.

  • Training puts St. Charles schools in prime position Jan 6, 2015 3:56 PM
Every high school sport gets a preseason. Boys swimming gets two. First is the traditional preseason, which takes place the two weeks before the early December start to the season. The second of these heavy training periods comes over Christmas Break, when most teams take a competitive break or limit themselves to one meet and train heavily.
