    Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program recently announced it will award nearly $400,000 in scholarships and prizes to more than 2,500 students who have made a positive impact on their communities. Nominations for kids, age 6 to 18, will be accepted Jan. 30 to March 13 at kohlskids.com. “Children around the country are doing inspiring work in their communities every day and Kohl's is proud to reward these future leaders through the Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program,” said Bevin Bailis.

    High school students can learn more about the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at “Explore ACES” on March 13-14. This student-run event introduces both prospective and admitted students to ACES faculty, academic offerings, and student organizations. More than 100 exhibits showcase academics, research, and student development opportunities. Students can also learn about study-abroad programs, how ACES graduates are using their degrees, and tips on applying for more than $2.5 million in scholarships within the College of ACES.

    Wayne/Winfield Area Youth/Family Services has announced its continuing education topic, “Treatment Strategies for Working with Sexually Abused Children.” It will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4. This Continuing Education Unit will be presented by Bonnie Fries, a licensed clinical social worker and assistant director for The Children’s Advocacy Center of North and Northwest Cook County.

    The Fox Valley Wildlife Center in Elburn will hold its 13th annual Winter Dinner Auction from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Fox Valley Country Club in North Aurora. Tickets are $50 per person. This is its biggest fundraiser of the year and all money raised goes toward the care and treatment of the animals who come into their care.

    Financial Peace University, a free, public, personal money-management course, will be offered by Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity starting Saturday, Jan. 31. The interactive class will meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 31 through March 28, at Genesis Community Church, 1300 S. Broadway in Montgomery. Individuals and couples earning up to $45,000 annually are invited.

    On Jan. 19, GreenFields of Geneva honored the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through a day of service. “Dr. King devoted his life to helping create a better world. MLK Day is known as a ‘day on’ rather than a ‘day off’,” said Rebecca Sytsma, activities coordinator at GreenFields. “We recruited GreenFields residents along with volunteers from throughout the area, to collaborate on a wonderful service project.”

    The Albright Theatre Company in Batavia presents Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap.” It is a murder mystery that focuses on a group of strangers who have been stranded at the Monkswell Manor during a snowstorm. The Manor also holds something else — a suspect to the recent murder of a woman in London. In true Christie fashion, “The Mousetrap” will keep you guessing who the killer is until the very end.

  • Suburban home prices experience strong gains in 2014 Jan 21, 2015 5:26 PM
    The suburban Chicago housing market ended 2014 on a positive note: the number of homes that went under contract in December 2014 increased 19.4 percent over the same period last year, the largest year-over-year increase to date. Home prices also continued to grow, with the median sales price of detached homes up 8.8 percent compared with 2013, according to statistics released today by the Mainstreet Organization of REALTORS.
