    Mike Zunino hit a three-run homer, Hisashi Iwakuma pitched seven innings and the Seattle Mariners beat the White Sox 4-1 on Friday night for their fourth straight victory. Zunino moved into a tie for the major league lead in home runs by a catcher with his 18th of the season. Zunino’s opposite-field drive to right off Jose Quintana in the fifth gave Seattle a 3-1 lead and came after Chicago third baseman Conor Gillaspie dropped a popup from Logan Morrison. Kendrys Morales added a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

    The 96th PGA Championship is only at the midway point, but its two weekend rounds will be lacking something. Tiger Woods won’t be around when the pursuit of front-running Rory McIlroy resumes on Saturday. Woods missed the cut after shooting his second straight 74 in Friday’s second round at Valhalla, and that could well mean the end to a dismal, injury-filled season for golf’s long-time No. 1 star. He still has a long way to go to recover from the back problems that bothered him all season and required surgery March 31. His 6-over-par 146 total at Valhalla was 5 strokes above the cut line to play the final 36 holes of the last major championship of 2014.

    There definitely was a fresh buzz around the ballpark early Friday as Cubs fans eagerly anticipated the Wrigley Field debut of second baseman Javier Baez. In the three games at Colorado this week, Baez hit 3 home runs, including 2 Thursday. In Friday's 4-3, 10-inning loss to the Rays, he singled once and struck out four times.

  • Judge rules against NCAA in O'Bannon case Aug 8, 2014 7:03 PM
    A federal judge has ruled that the NCAA can't stop college football and basketball players from selling the rights to their names and likenesses, opening the way to athletes getting payouts once their college careers are over. In a landmark decision issued Friday, U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken ruled in favor of former UCLA basketball star Ed O'Bannon and 19 others in a lawsuit that challenged the NCAA's regulation of college athletics on antitrust grounds.

    The Cubs made a trade Friday, obtaining right-handed pitcher Jacob Turner from the Miami Marlins for two minor-league pitchers. Turner will be added to the 25-man roster when he arrives at Wrigley Field. Turner is a former first-round draft pick of the Detriot Tigers.
