    It was a sunny August afternoon in 2006, and then-South Elgin football coach Dale Schabert was giving this reporter a tour of the new high school. We walked from the athletics office through the locker rooms and out to the new football field. As we stood at the 50-yard line conducting an interview about Schabert’s team for the season preview edition, a cast of five hawks began circling above.

    The Neuqua Valley football team doesn’t do Saturdays too often. Friday nights under the bright lights, that’s more the Wildcats’ speed. Their last day game? Two years ago this week at the same venue as Saturday’s Upstate Eight Valley matinee: South Elgin. Like all cats, these Wildcats are flexible, though, even when it comes to their schedule. In fact, Neuqua Valley linebacker Derrek Warkenthien credited the longer practice week with allowing his defense time to prepare for a South Elgin offense averaging 47 points per game.

    Crystal Lake South linebacker Alex “Bubba” Gardeck thought he had the wind knocked out of him. Turns out he actually had the wind knocked into him. Gardeck suffered an unusual football injury on Saturday when he tore a hole in his trachea at some point during the first half of CL South’s 23-13 loss at Bloom Township.

    Kate Lillie is one of those golfers who doesn’t mind bad weather.So Monday was just what the doctor ordered for the St. Charles North sophomore. Lillie shot a 1-under par 34 to win the individual title and lead the North Stars to their second-straight team championship of the South Elgin Invitational at the cold and damp Elgin Country Club.

  • Neuqua Valley holds off South Elgin Sep 16, 2014 9:35 PM
    Momentum is a funny thing and sometimes it can be gained even through a loss. That’s what happened with the Neuqua Valley girls volleyball team at South Elgin Tuesday night. The Wildcats lost Game 1 of the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division match but the momentum they gained with a big comeback that fell just short carried into the rest of the night. They held off the scrappy Storm 24-26, 25-13, 25-22 to remain undefeated in the division.
