  • Wheeling scores second-place Erb finish Dec 20, 2014 6:13 PM
With Metea Valley holding a commanding 44-point lead heading into the final round, the closest battle was going to be for second place Saturday at the 51st Annual Rus Erb Wrestling Tournament. The Mustangs rolled to the championship of the powerful 17-team tourney at Glenbrook South with 200.5 points. And Wheeling came through when the chips were down as the Wildcats overcame Oswego 141 to 138.5 to take home the runner-up trophy. Carmel Catholic wound up placing sixth with 119 points as the Corsairs had a very strong showing with four wrestlers reaching the championship match.

  • Wauconda holds off Elgin Dec 20, 2014 6:38 PM
Frustration boiled over in the Elgin locker room at halftime of Saturday morning’s 83-75 loss to Wauconda at Marengo, and that was probably a good thing. Trailing by 14 after the Bulldogs smacked Elgin with an 11-0 run to close the half, the Maroons cleared the air.

  • Parsons’ fall clinches Geneva’s win over Kaneland Dec 20, 2014 8:07 PM
Colin Parsons was not about to watch the 18-point wrestling lead Geneva enjoyed fade into oblivion. The Vikings’ senior had other ideas when taking the mat for the final match against Kaneland Saturday afternoon.

  • Negron, Larkin topple Prairie Ridge Dec 20, 2014 8:50 PM
There was a lesson learned after the Larkin boys basketball team dropped an Upstate River matchup to St. Charles North Friday night — that sophomore Christian Negron has to be more of a focal point offensively by being aggressive and selfish. While the 6-foot-6 inch Negron carries an alternative approach, there was no doubt that Larkin benefits from that game plan after he poured in 18 points in Larkin’s 58-48 win over Prairie Ridge to open pool play of the 2014 Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs in Algonquin Saturday.

  • Duff helps Carmel snuff skid Dec 20, 2014 6:18 PM
C.J. Duff stretched his run of “A” efforts to three, while his Carmel Catholic basketball team stopped a streak of another kind. “It’s a relief, definitely,” a smiling Duff said after the Corsairs snapped a five-game losing slide with a 71-62 win over Grant in the opening game of Jacobs’ Hinkle Holiday Classic on Saturday morning. Duff finished with 31 points (three 3-pointers), 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. The junior guard had also turned in an “A” performance Friday night by scoring a career-high 30 points against Joliet Catholic.

  • Repeat Leyden title for Rolling Meadows Dec 20, 2014 9:04 PM
Rolling Meadows repeated as champion of the boys swimming invitational at Leyden, topping West Chicago and the host Eagles for the title on Saturday. Jake Barson won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.21, Filip Pancerz won the 100 back in 59.49, Kuba Debkowski won the 50 free in 23.22 and Josh Dellorto won twice, taking both the 200 free (1:48.68) and 500 free (4:59.87). The 500 effort from Dellorto lowered his own team record. With victories in all three relays, the Mustangs finished with 311 points, while West Chicago finished at 260 and Leyden at 206.

  • Ivanauskas powers Barrington past South Elgin Dec 20, 2014 9:31 PM
If it was bad enough South Elgin’s boys basketball team got eaten up by 6-foot-6 inch Mark Konkle for 26 points in a 32-point loss to Metea Valley on Friday, Saturday’s matchup that featured 6-foot-9 Barrington junior Rapolas Ivanauskas only got worse for the Storm. Ivanauskas gave the Storm a taste of what Barrington’s big man can do in a 65-43 Broncos win to open up pool play at the 2014 Hinkle Holiday Classic at Jacobs.

  • Libertyville’s Harrington takes the long view at Lake County meet Dec 20, 2014 9:25 PM
Libertyville standout swimmer Matt Harrington summed it up best. “The Lake County Invite is always a great training meet and it’s still early in the season so it also serves as kind of an experiment to see where you stand,” the Princeton-bound senior said after winning the 500 freestyle, finishing second in the 200 freestyle and taking legs on the second-place 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. “I’m really working on getting mentally stronger. I do well and get off to good starts but then I tend to fall off at the end. Today I swam almost 900 yards. That’s great for getting more familiar with the pain that goes along with getting stronger. Plus, by swimming the longer events it helps me finish stronger in the shorter events.” Incidentally, Harrington’s times in the 200 (1:41.85) and 500 freestyle (4:43.89) were both school records, which made first-year coach Mike Cunningham even more ecstatic.

  • Jacobs outlasts Bartlett in OT Dec 20, 2014 10:55 PM
After Bartlett’s Jordan Anderson hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 55 and it to overtime, it seemed like the Hawks would have the momentum going into the extra session. Jacobs made sure that didn’t happen. The Golden Eagles outscored the Hawks 16-9 in OT to pull off an exhilarating 71-64 win in first round action of the Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs Saturday night.

  • Raridon run lifts Neuqua over Waubonsie Dec 20, 2014 11:07 PM
Waubonsie Valley boys basketball coach Chaz Taft called it the “Raridon run.” It came Saturday after his Warriors answered an 11-point second quarter deficit to tie Neuqua Valley early in the third quarter.

  • Huntley falters late against Marian Central Dec 20, 2014 11:41 PM
It was a fourth quarter to remember for Marian Central. It was one to forget for Huntley. The Hurricanes, who led 28-25 going into the final period, outscored the Red Raiders 18-7 in the fourth quarter to post a 46-32 win in first round action of the Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs High School in Algonquin Saturday night.

  • Energy, outcome favors Fremd against Barrington Dec 19, 2014 10:31 PM
It was easy to spot Fremd boys swimming coach Kristen Newby on Friday night. She was the high-energy one with the big grin on the deck of her school’s pool, as she seemingly pep-talked every member of her team as its Mid-Suburban League West showdown with visiting Barrington unfolded. She had every right to be enthusiastic. As the meet wore on, she knew the score, literally and figuratively — her squad had a good chance to defeat the Broncos and in the process win the biggest dual of the young Mid-Suburban West season. Newby was still all smiles when it was over, as the Vikings swam away with a 104-82 victory, to head into the holiday break with perhaps an unexpected gift.
