  • Crystal Lake South comes back to beat Prairie Ridge Mar 3, 2015 11:07 PM
After three quarters of less than stellar basketball, Crystal Lake South’s chances of beating District 155 rival Prairie Ridge for a third time this season seemed bleak. Shooting 7 of 30 from the field for 23 percent through 24 minutes, the second-seeded Gators trailed PR 32-22 heading into the fourth quarter. South saved its best for last. Spearheaded by a 17 -0 run, the Gators connected on all 6 shots they took in the final quarter including 4 of 4 from 3-point range in posting a 44-41 win over the stunned Wolves in Huntley Class 4A regional semifinal boys basketball action Tuesday night.

  • Larkin knocks out South Elgin Mar 3, 2015 11:16 PM
Last year’s Cinderella was unceremoniously booted from the annual ball Tuesday night. The South Elgin boys basketball team, which as a four-seed last year shocked top seed Larkin in overtime in a regional semifinal and advanced all the way to the Class 4A Sweet 16, couldn’t cast the same spell on the Royals two years in a row. No. 1 Larkin blew open a 4-point game at the half by outscoring No. 4 South Elgin 40-17 in the final two quarters to post a 62-35 victory in a Bartlett regional semifinal.

  • A successful first step for Stevenson Mar 3, 2015 11:00 PM
The journey back to the state finals officially began on Tuesday for the Stevenson boys basketball team. Unofficially, it began almost a full year ago. The Patriots have been intent on returning to Peoria ever since they lost in Peoria. That was back in mid-March of 2014 to Whitney Young in the Class 4A state semifinals. They’ve spent the entire off-season and all of the recently completed regular season waiting for this year’s IHSA tournament to get underway. They desperately want another shot at a state championship. Stevenson took the first step on its own floor with a breezy 79-38 victory over Maine East in the opening round of regional play.

  • Lake Zurich bounces stubborn Schaumburg Mar 3, 2015 9:58 PM
Saying the final 1:54 of the Class 4A boys basketball regional semifinal at Wheeling on Tuesday night was wild would be putting it mildly. Anything that a high school sports fan could want happened in the final two minutes. • Sectional semifinal has St. Edward on brink of history Mar 3, 2015 5:02 PM
The St. Edward boys basketball team can stamp itself among the most successful in program history with one more victory. The Green Wave (24-5) face Fieldcrest in a Class 2A El Paso-Gridley sectional semifinal on Wednesday at 7 p.m. A 25th win would put the 2014-15 team in elite company. Since the program’s inception in 1944-45, only three St. Edward squads have won 25 games in a season: coach Bob Fuller’s 25-3 Class A state qualifier in 1971-72; coach Jack McKiel’s 25-2 regional title team in 1972-73; and coach Joe Tullo’s 25-6 Class A state qualifier in 1986-87.

  • Huntley battles but falls to top seed Jefferson Mar 3, 2015 9:41 PM
Huntley gave top-seeded Jefferson all it wanted, but in the end the J-Hawks just had too much ML Moore. • St. Francis de Sales ousts Westminster Christian Mar 3, 2015 11:23 PM
The Westminster Christian boys basketball team posed as the “Comeback Kids” when the Warriors rallied from two 8-point deficits, one in the final 6 minutes of Friday’s regional title win against defending Class 1A state champion Mooseheart. Tuesday’s Harvest Christian sectional semifinal for all intent and purposes was over after the first 6 minutes, the point of no return. St. Francis de Sales ran the Warriors out of the gym quickly, 82-45, at the Mitchell Swaback Athletic Center in Elgin to advance to Friday’s sectional final behind a high octane first quarter that even had Westminster head coach Bruce Firchau perplexed.

  • St. Viator holds off Prospect Mar 3, 2015 11:29 PM
Prospect coach John Camardella could’ve sworn hot-shooting Grant Miller’s beat-the-clock 3-pointer was going in. St. Viator coach Quin Hayes was wishing it wouldn’t. Hayes got his wish and his Lions got the win Tuesday night, 49-48 in the Class 4A boys basketball regional semifinal at Wheeling. Miller’s shot, as time expired, hung high and bounced softly off the front rim and backboard before hopping out. Fifth-seeded St. Viator will meet No. 4 Lake Zurich on Friday night for the regional title and a spot in the Barrington sectional semifinals next Tuesday.
