    Gymnastics regionals can bring tears of joy and of sorry.Hit your routines and finish in the top five in an event and you qualify for sectionals individually and perhaps also help your team do so. Wobble too much or fall and you might be left wondering, “What could have been?” Naperville North doesn’t have to answer that question, nor did the Huskies shed any tears after they won Wednesday’s Naperville North regional with 138.3 points, finishing comfortably ahead of runner-up Oswego co-op’s 133.975.

    Pep rallies about reading came to several Naperville-area elementary schools Tuesday and Wednesday as part of the 13th annual Naperville READS program, which this year is highlighting 12 children’s authors. Students from May Watts and Steck elementary schools in Indian Prairie Unit District 204 heard Wednesday from authors Tom Watson, Jenny Lee and John Kloepfer during a presentation in which students were divided into teams rooting for different books.

    Visitors can get a sneak peek Thursday of the new Cleve Carney Art Gallery at the McAninch Arts Center on the College of DuPage's Glen Ellyn campus. The 1,850-square-foot gallery is part of the 14-month, $35 million MAC renovation and opens its doors from noon until 2 p.m. for a preview of its inaugural exhibition, “Selection of Artworks from the Cleve Carney Collection.”

    Of the many words that could be used to describe Neuqua Valley’s 65-61 girls basketball win at South Elgin Monday night, one is all that’s needed. Craziness. In a game that saw 47 fouls called, 71 free throws attempted, two bloody lips, three technical fouls and one coach ejection, the end result was the Wildcats claiming their second straight Upstate Eight Valley championship.

    Indian Prairie Unit District 204 might look to voters for additional money to pay for air-conditioning units for 20 of its schools that don't have cooling systems. The school board this week began considering ways to pay the estimated $13.6 million cost of installing units called ductless air conditioners to cool roughly 650 classrooms.

    It was a night of bests for one of the best girls gymnastics teams in the state, as well as others, during Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference Meet at Neuqua Valley in Naperville. Geneva’s Claire Ginsberg, Dominique Brognia, Grace Ginsberg, Megan Beitzel, McKenna Merges and Claire Scatterday made school history with, by far, the best gymnastics performance in Vikings history. They shattered the previous school scoring record of 146.275, established at last year’s Geneva regional, with 149.15 points to easily win the conference meet.

    The third time was a charm, and now Neuqua Valley is hoping the fourth time come Saturday also will bring good results. After two weather cancellations this month, South Elgin finally was able to come to Naperville and take on the Wildcats in a battle of Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division front-runners Wednesday night. Neuqua Valley stayed perfect in league play with a 53-46 win and now has a two-game lead on the Storm (15-7, 7-2)

     
  • Plainfield charity helps children who lose parents in vehicle crashes Jan 29, 2014 8:27 PM
    A Plainfield-based group, the Little Footprints Foundation, tries to help children ages 4 to 14 who have lost parents in auto accidents by providing money over an 18-month period to buy clothes. The group's founder says she now wants to reach out to the children of the tollway worker killed in Monday's crash along I-88.

     
  • Superintendent search ‘on schedule’ in Dist. 204 Jan 29, 2014 4:11 PM
    Indian Prairie District 204’s search for a superintendent to succeed Kathy Birkett is progressing on schedule, and board members plan to choose the right candidate for the job by late February or early March. School board President Lori Price said board members who reviewed resumes during a recent closed meeting “were very impressed with the candidates” that poured in from across the country through Iowa-based search firm Ray and Associates, Inc.
