    Jordan Lynch broke his single-game rushing record for quarterbacks with 321 yards and No. 18 Northern Illinois completed its first unbeaten regular season in 50 years with a 33-14 victory over Western Michigan on Tuesday night. "Jordan Lynch is the best player in college football and that's no disrespect to anyone else" said Western Michigan coach P.J. Fleck, who starred at Kaneland High School and Northern Illinois, before taking over the Broncos.

    Northern Illinois is a 35-point favorite Tuesday night against Western Michigan (1-10, 1-6 MAC) but Huskies coach Rod Carey won’t let anyone take the week off. A victory would give the Huskies (11-0, 7-0) their first unbeaten regular season since reaching major college status in 1969, and it would extend the nation’s longest active home winning streak to 26.

    Northern Illinois moved ahead of Fresno State in the BCS standings and up to No. 14 as the Huskies and Bulldogs jockey to be the last BCS buster. NIU jumped two spots Sunday and Fresno State slipped one to 16th. The top three teams in the BCS standings were unchanged: Alabama, Florida State and Ohio State — the remaining undefeated teams in BCS automatic qualifying conferences. The other major college unbeatens, Northern Illinois and Fresno State, are fighting for one automatic bid. They have to finish in the top 12 of the last BCS standings, which comes out Dec. 8, or finish in the top 16 while ranking ahead of an AQ-conference champion. Central Florida is in position to win the American Athletic Conference auto-bid, but is 19th in the latest standings. BCS standings: 1. Alabama 2. Florida St. 3. Ohio St. 4. Auburn 5. Missouri 6.     Backed up against the end zone on third down, Northern Illinois' Jordan Lynch had the defense right where he wanted. He dropped back, waited until he spotted an opening and scrambled up the middle for a first down that sparked a 99-yard drive, clinching a 35-17 victory over Toledo on Wednesday night. "That's a momentum killer," he said. "It's a real dagger to the defense."

The Rockets (7-3, 5-1) won’t only try to play spoiler against the Huskies, who can clinch a spot in the MAC title game. A Toledo victory would put the Rockets in good shape to win the league’s west division.

The Huskies (9-0, 5-0 Mid-American West) go for their 25th straight home win against Ball State (9-1, 6-0) at 7 p.m. at Huskie Stadium. “It's going to be a big challenge for us,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said.

Northern Illinois jumped up to No. 15 in the BCS on Sunday — after having the weekend off — moving three places forward from last week, when they fell one spot following a 63-19 victory over UMass.

The No. 21 Huskies are averaging 41.9 points per game. The Minutemen have scored a total of 85 all year as they continue to struggle in their second season of FBS play.

    Jordan Lynch threw four touchdown passes and caught another as No. 23 Northern Illinois reached its best start as a major program with a 59-20 victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday. The Huskies (8-0, 4-0 Mid-American Conference) never trailed on the way to a season-high in points and second-highest total offense (658 yards).

    No. 23 Northern Illinois and quarterback Jordan Lynch typically draw attention for their supercharged offense. After last week, the Huskies’ defensive play is getting some notice, too. NIU allowed fewer than 100 rushing yards last Saturday in a 38-17 victory at Central Michigan. “I’m really ecstatic with the defense,” coach Rod Carey said. “In certain games, the numbers don’t look good but the play has been good. Now the numbers are kind of starting to match up with the play.”

    Northern Illinois got national attention with its offense, then topped Akron last weekend with a lot of help from its defense. The 23rd-ranked Huskies (6-0, 2-0 Mid-American) hope to tip the balance back where it started when they travel to Central Michigan on Saturday. Northern Illinois converted just one of its 15 third-down attempts last week but got a blocked extra-point and interception, as well as a late fourth-down stand to keep itself perfect.
