    Puppies will continue to be on the minds of the Naperville City Council and city staff members as they research whether the city should limit the sale of dogs from so-called puppy mills, as the majority of 21 speakers Tuesday night asked them to do. “We are not crazy animal activists; we simply want Naperville to continue its fine reputation of excellence and local compassion without the blemish of the puppy mill business,” Naperville resident Tracey Rees said.

    The parents of a Naperville teacher stabbed to death in February 2012 say they are growing more frustrated with each passing day their son’s accused killer is not brought to justice. Shaun Wild was a 24-year-old North Central College graduate and Spring Brook Elementary School teacher when he was killed in the early morning hours of Feb. 4, 2012, in a downtown Naperville bar.

    It was a “fantastic” and “flawless” Labor Day weekend at the Last Fling in Naperville, at least as far as Family Fun Land is concerned. Mary Cooke-Hall, chairwoman for Family Fun Land, said the kid-friendly zone drew roughly 15,000 visitors throughout the four-day festival. “The rain held at bay,” Cooke-Hall said. “We were really worried about that for Saturday and Monday, but it turned out to be just beautiful.”

The rain moved out in time for folks to take rides in the WWII B-17 Bomber at the Aurora Airport and stroll through the 60th Annual Art Fair on the Square in Lake Forest.

    Participants in the Fling Mile and the Last Fling Labor Day Parade will follow roughly the same 5,280-foot route through downtown Naperville, but at different times on Monday morning. The race comes first at 9:15 a.m., followed by the annual parade at 10 a.m. "The theme this year is a celebration of military service," said Melissa Hupp, chairwoman of special events for the Last Fling."

    Naperville police are looking for an armed robber who stole a wallet from a person walking in a parking lot on Route 59 Friday afternoon, authorities said. The suspect, described as man in his 20s wearing dark clothing, showed a handgun, demanded the wallet and fled in a waiting car, police said.

     
  • Naperville woman’s pillowcase project helping young Edward hospital patients Aug 30, 2014 7:35 AM
    Pediatric hospital rooms at Edward Hospital in Naperville are becoming brighter one piece of bed linen at a time. A Naperville woman, her twin sister and a friend are sewing roughly 60 pillowcases a month and giving them to the hospital in a project they call KaLaCares. “We both loved the idea of making a difference, even if only for a moment, in a child’s life,” said Karen Butz of Naperville, who started the pillowcase project with her sister, Laura Seyfarth of Mill Valley, California.

    Otto Becker, 67, of Aurora, has been blind his entire life. But ever since he met his friend Dan Coyne two years ago, the pair have become adrenaline junkies. Coyne, who has his vision, acts as Becker’s guide and fellow guinea pig. They’ve conquered paint balling. They’ve gone sailing on Lake Michigan during high winds. And they thought sky diving, at least the indoor version at iFly in Naperville, would be a can't miss experience.

    A mural of people enjoying a parade that has been coming together for four years in a downtown Naperville alley is fast approaching its dedication day. Century Walk Corp. will dedicate its 47th piece of public art at noon Monday after the Last Fling Labor Day Parade. “It’s the ‘Naperville Loves a Parade’ mural and the parade has just concluded so why not tie them together?” Century Walk Chairman Brand Bobosky said.

    A Naperville man is behind bars charged with several heroin-related crimes, including bringing the drug into a penal institution by hiding it in his rectum. Michael Chacón, 25, of the 1200 block of Suffolk Street, recently was arrested at his home and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
