On January 17, The Birches Assisted Living in Clarendon Hills will offer an educational program titled "Keeping Connected to Someone with Dementia," which teaches caregivers how to create more meaningful relationships with their clients or loved ones who have dementia. Daniel Kuhn, a licensed clinical social worker, vice president of education at All Trust Home Care and author of the book "Alzheimer's Early Stage: First Steps for Family, Friends and Caregivers," will present the program from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in The Birches' Main Dining Room, located at 215 55th St. in Clarendon Hills. People with dementia often struggle to express their thoughts and emotions, which makes them feel increasingly isolated from those around them. But caregivers are in a prime position to prevent this from happening by learning communication strategies that make their loved ones or clients feel socially connected and acknowledged.
