    The sky above Naperville’s Frontier Sports Complex was filled on Sunday with kites of all shapes and sizes — from small Spider-Man kites to gigantic streamers that nearly blotted out the sun. More than 1,000 people attended the eighth annual Frontier Kite Fly Festival in Naperville, organizers say.

For one, work to build a flood wall and a handicapped accessible path around the administration center at 320 W. Jackson is likely to take place this year instead of next year .“The sooner we get the ADA work done, the better off we are,” commissioner Marie Todd said. “And if we can put the wall in, just do it.”

    A last-minute letter from the DuPage County Division of Environmental Concerns caused Naperville Park District to delay approval of a contract for the remainder of lead removal and site improvements at Sportsman's Park. The concerns are "nothing earth-shattering," Executive Director Ray McGury said, but park district officials would like to get them ironed out before potential approval of a $2.9 million contract for lead removal and other work at the park.

    Work to remove traces of lead from the soil at Sportsman’s Park near downtown Naperville is set to resume this spring, but the park district first needs some cooperation from Mother Nature. Removal of trees in a 17-acre area where soil cleanup will take place was scheduled to begin this week, but was delayed because of cold weather, park officials said.

    Naperville Park District commissioners on Thursday night hired a construction manager for the district’s next major project, approving a guaranteed maximum cost of $20.9 million for construction of an indoor activity center. “Looking back at the top responses over our last three community surveys, this building and the spaces in it hit all the major spaces identified in those surveys except for a swimming pool,” said Brad Wilson, director of recreation.

    Naperville Park District will apply for a state grant that could fund roughly 10 percent of the cost to build an indoor activity center at Quincy Avenue and Fort Hill Drive. The district is seeking up to $2.5 million from the Park and Recreation Construction program administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources after $25 million of available funding was announced in January, said Sue Omanson, community development manager.

    A digital media lab the Naperville Public Library is creating for 95th Street Library patrons is set to open sometime next month. Julie Rothenfluh, executive director, said the digital media lab plans to host an open house sometime in February so people can get expert assistance and firsthand experience with programs such as iMovie, GarageBand, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop as well as a new 3-D printer.

     
  • Park district seeks activity center ideas from Naperville residents Jan 13, 2014 3:58 PM
    Residents who will use Naperville Park District’s indoor activity center of the future are invited to three open houses this month to share ideas about which amenities they would like the facility to include. Basketball courts, a walking track and a basic fitness center definitely will be included, but past that, the park district is open to suggestions for the $20 million facility to be built at 1760 Quincy Avenue.
