    Harper speech, debate team takes fourth at Nationals May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
    The Harper College Speech Team finished fourth in the nation at the recent Phi Rho Pi National community college speech and debate tournament, besting dozens of fellow community colleges and boasting two individual champions. Elisa Galvan of Schaumburg and Brianna Bitout of Arlington Heights netted gold medals for extemporaneous and impromptu speaking, respectively.

While that is not incorrect, the truth of the matter lies in the obvious fact that a child who participates in a sport is offered far more benefits than just having an enjoyable time. Childhood obesity has reached an all time high, doubling in children and tripling in adolescents over the past 30 years.     Lakeside Legacy Foundation located in Crystal Lake is steeped in art and history, and a mural depicting Lakeside’s mission is being painted on a large brick wall facing the rear driveway of the building. Amber Larsen, Lakeside Resident Partner Artist and owner of Creative Artistry School of Fine Arts; which is located in Lakeside’s Highland house behind the Dole Mansion, is leading the mural project. The mural brings to life in paint what Lakeside is all about. That Lakeside is a community arts center that brings the arts alive, cultivates creativity, and is a place for the community to gather and celebrate. Lakeside Legacy Foundation was created in 2002 by the out-pouring of community support to save the historic property from demolition. The foundation is celebrating it’s eleventh year, and this mural project is a visual expression of its commitment to the community and the arts!

    High-schoolers walk at Harper commencement May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
    Included in the 550 or so students who donned caps and gowns Saturday at Harper College's commencement was a contingent not yet old enough to vote, but qualified to take vital signs, transfer patients and practice infection control. A total of 18 high-schoolers, 17 from Wheeling High School alone, walked after completing their Certified Nursing Assistant certificate, among the numerous fast-growing dual credit options that Harper offers.
