McKinzie Mangers' first-inning second life was all the Kaneland softball team needed to make quick work of Rosary on Wednesday afternoon. The Kaneland senior co-captain — moments after Rosary muffed a foul pop that would have been the third out — laced a 2-run single up the middle in the Knights' first at-bat in semifinal action of the IMSA Class 3A regional in Aurora.

Here we go again. Believe it or not, it has been nearly a year since Kaneland captured the Class 3A state baseball championship with an 11-3 victory over Oak Forest. "Looking back at it, it was a blur," said Knights coach Brian Aversa. "You have to enjoy it while it lasts. Before I knew it, we were playing on a Saturday for the state championship. "It was great." Despite graduating a ton of talent from last year's team, Kaneland finds itself in a similar position heading into this week's postseason tournament — as the top seed in the regional.

Central District 301 has named new principals. Jeff King is moving from Gilberts Elementary School in Community Unit District 300 to become principal at Country Trails Elementary School in Elgin. Current Country Trails Principal Carie Walter is replacing Lloyd Stover at Central Middle School near Burlington.

Kaneland threw Nathaniel Kucera into the 400-meter dash in the hopes of adding some team points to its total. He wound up running a state-qualifying time (50.65). Sophomore Nate Dyer was looking to advance to next weekend's IHSA state meet at Eastern Illinois University in the discus. He threw a 155-foot, 9-inch throw to finish third at the Class 2A Rochelle boy's track sectional.

Late goal ends Kaneland’s season May 16, 2012 12:00 AM
Thanks to sparkling play from junior goalkeeper Jordan Ginther and a little assistance from the crossbar, Kaneland managed to keep Crystal Lake Central off the scoreboard for over 70 minutes in Wednesdays Burlington Central Class 2A semifinal. But, after a pair of narrow misses earlier in the contest, Tigers senior Madie Edwards finally made the Knights pay. Edwards took Katie Becks pass from 35 yards out and launched a rocket off a diving Ginther into the top right corner with 7:45 remaining to give No. 3 seed Crystal Lake Central a 1-0 victory over the second-seeded Knights.

Burlington Central blanks Kaneland May 12, 2012 12:00 AM
This is exactly how the Burlington Central girls soccer team wanted to head into the postseason. The Rockets controlled possession most of the match Saturday and scored twice in a 7-minute span in the first half to defeat Kaneland, 3-0, in their final regular-season match. Hands down it was our most complete game, Rockets coach Mike Gecan said. Great way to honor our seniors and send off them off the right way.
