    Jarrett Payton will kick off a series of Maine Township-sponsored programs about bullying on March 12 with a lecture at Maine West High School. He will be joined by Camille Paddock, a 15-year-old who was bullied at age 9 due to hair loss from an autoimmune disease. She founded a nonprofit organization, Cam’s Dare to Be Different.

    Sophomore Jeanne Boehm said she was nervous at the start of Monday’s Class 4A Maine East girls basketball sectional semifinal. By game’s end, it was the 6-foot-3 New Trier standout who helped calm the anxiety any Trevian fans had going into the game with No. 4 Maine West. Boehm scored a game-high 22 points with 3 blocked shots as top-seeded New Trier rolled past the Warriors 57-34 in Park Ridge. New Trier (26-4) will face Evanston (22-7) at 7 p.m. Thursday for the championship.

    Maine West Hall of Fame girls basketball coach Derril Kipp has steered the Warriors to 24 sectionals over the past 33 seasons. Monday’s appearance in the Class 4A Maine East semifinal will be the Warriors’ first since 2007 when they won their ninth sectional crown under Kipp. To win a tenth, the No. 4-seeded Warriors (17-11) must first stop top-seeded New Trier, which brings a record of 25-4 into the game which begins at 6 p.m.

    A 3-pointer at the buzzer gave Maine South a 19-12 lead over Maine West at halftime of Thursday’s championship game of the Warriors Class 4A regional in Des Plaines. “I thought that 3-pointer would really hurt us,” said Maine West coach Derril Kipp. Instead, the Warriors came out of intermission on a mission. With senior Brittany Collins scoring 20 of her game-high 24 points in the final two quarters, the No. 4 Warriors got past the No. 5 Hawks 44-39.

    As the final whistles were blown across the big floor of State Farm Arena to signal the end of the first day of competition at the wrestling state tournament Thursday, the state of play follows: Five Mid-Suburban League competitors have a foothold in the championship bracket after advancing into Friday’s quarterfinals. Barrington’s Mitch Stathakis (106 pounds, 33-3) and Matt Conrad (132, 32-11) advanced with first-round victories, as did Wheeling’s Tulga Zuunbayan (40-8), after a stunning OT win. Champaign veteran Matt Stopka (Schaumburg) and three-time qualifier, Bobby Alexander (Conant), whose travel plans here were almost cancelled, join their teammates from the MSL for Friday’s 1:30 p.m. quarterfinals and a chance at the 7 p.m. semifinals, which would guarantee a state medal later.

    Many great players have graced the Maine West girls basketball program which has been directed by Hall of Fame coach Derril Kipp for the past 34 years.But in her four seasons as a Warrior, Brittany Collins has managed to separate herself from them all. On Tuesday night in Des Plaines, she became the first boy or girl in school history to score 2,000 points. The 6-foot senior forward received a short entry pass from her longtime post partner Julia Huinker and took the ball in for an easy layup with 7:14 in the first quarter giving her 2,001 points. It also gave West a 2-2 tie and the No. 4-seeded Warriors would never trail again in a 53-36 triumph over No. 13 Lane Tech in the semifinals of the Class 4A Maine West regional. The Warriors (16-11) advance to Thursday’s championship against No. 5 Maine South (18-12), which defeated No. 12 Taft 72-44 in the second semifinal.

    Already enjoying a record-breaking season for Maine West’s girls basketball team, Brittany Collins came within 1 point of yet another milestone on Saturday afternoon. Playing in Chicago, the same city where she will be a freshman for St. Xavier’s women’s basketball team in less than eight months, Collins scored 20 points in a 66-52 loss at Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy. The 6-foot senior forward needs 1 more point to become the program’s first player to reach 2,000.

  • Maine West flash mob seeks end to violence against women Feb 14, 2014 6:28 PM
    Some Maine West High School students got to school early Friday to be part of a before class flash mob, performing dances, poetry and other spectacles to promote ending violence against women. Similar events were held at noon at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines and Skokie and in the evening at the Gail Borden Library in Elgin as part of a worldwide One Billion Rising campaign to raise awareness.

    One of the biggest crowds to watch a Maine East girls basketball game turned out Friday night in Park Ridge. And it turned out to be a real celebration. The Blue Demons awarded their enthusiastic backers a historic win as they captured their first girls basketball conference championship in school history with a 48-44 victory over Maine West, which is coincidentally the conference’s queen of divisional crowns with 25.

Becoming one of the few girls basketball players in the Mid-Suburban League to reach 2,000 points, Kemph led the Mustangs’ big second-half rally in Quincy where the Mustangs topped Quincy Notre Dame 63-56 at the KHQA/Subway Superfan Shootout.

    Trailing by 11 points with less than four minutes left, Maine West’s girls basketball team staged one of its biggest comeback of the season to get past host Deerfield 57-55 on Friday night. Senior Brittany Collins came up with a 3-point play with seven seconds left to give the Warriors the final margin of victory, capping one of the top games of her career. The St. Xavier recruit scored 37 points, one shy of her career high against Niles North, and grabbed 19 rebounds in the Central Suburban North game that left the Warriors tied for first with Maine East.

    Everything that could have gone right for the Deerfield Warriors, did. Everything that could have gone wrong for the Maine West Warriors, ditto. Following Deerfield’s 61-38 win over Maine West in Des Plaines, Deerfield coach Dan McKendrick found out that Maine East had upset Highland Park, leaving those two teams tied for the Central Suburban North lead at 7-1 as Deerfield improved to 15-5 overall. Maine West (9-11, 3-4) played their first of four games in the next five days and missed an opportunity to get back into the league race.

    Jason Kradman will be Maine West’s next varsity football coach pending District 207 Board of Education approval. Kradman has been recommended for the job; the District 207 Board will take action on his appointment at a March 3 meeting.
