    When Maine West High School senior Elizabeth Stenholt recently was honored at a recent school board meeting for excellence in the performing arts, Principal Audrey Haugan urged everyone to watch for Elizabeth because “she’s going to be a star.” Sound advice. At 18, Elizabeth, who plays the lead in West’s upcoming musical, “Aida,” already has built a resume of more than 40 performances.

    Gregg Lugo came up big for the Hoffman Estates boys volleyball team Tuesday night at Conant. The hard-hitting senior outside had 11 kills – 3 of them down the stretch in game 3 – as the Hawks overcame a strong effort by the never-say-die Cougars to win 25-19, 20-25, 25-18 in the Mid-Suburban West.

    With his team battling a tough streak at the plate and a cold northeast wind blowing in, Crosley Duckmann knew he and his teammates would need to get back to basics. “I tried to get my front foot down and take a two-strike approach and hit it hard on the ground,” Duckmann explained. “As a team, we have been struggling a little bit. Hopefully this will get us going.” Duckmann’s approached worked well, with the senior reaching base on all 4 of his appearances and scoring 3 times as Maine West overpowered Hersey 10-6 Saturday in Des Plaines.

    Schaumburg’s softball team moved into a first-place tie with Conant (9-0, 6-0) in the Mid-Suburban West with its 16-2 five-inning victory at Palatine on Friday. The Saxons (13-4, 6-0) received a 4-hitter from junior Shannon Felde (6-1), who struck out six while junior shortstop Elaine Walker helped ignite the offense by going 2-for-4 with a home run, double and 2 RBI. Classmate Roxanne Kakareka also belted a homer for Saxons and collected 4 RBI.

    Brian Polaski allowed 1 run on 7 hits with 5 strikeouts through 7 innings before visiting Benet broke through for 6 runs in the top of the eighth inning against Conant relievers to claim a 7-1 nonconference baseball victory Thursday.

    A hearing officer has upheld the firing of a former Maine West soccer coach dismissed by Maine Township High School District 207 last year for not appropriately responding to allegations of hazing. Former freshman soccer coach Emilio Rodriguez, formally dismissed by the school board in January 2013, appealed his termination to an independent hearing officer a month later — a process that tenured teachers may request under state law.

    Hoffman Estates softball pitcher Tracy Osimowicz got her fourth win of the season and went 4-for-4 at the plate with 4 singles as the Hawks topped visiting Prospect 5-1. Sophomore Angela Roman’s home run in the first inning gave the Knights a 1-0 lead but Hoffman scored 4 runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to take command.

    Halfway through the Mid-Suburban League boys volleyball season, Barrington is right where it wants to be: Undefeated in conference play, and in first place in the West Division. Led by senior defensive specialist Indy Nenn (10 digs), the Broncos scored a resounding 25-16, 25-17 victory over visiting Schaumburg on Tuesday in a battle of teams that both came in to the match with 4-0 conference records.

    All three Maine Township High School District 207 schools have been recognized on The Washington Post’s 2014 list of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools.” It marks the first time in the district’s history that all three schools have made one of the top high school lists at the same time.

    Paige Alt had a game to remember on the pitcher’s mound for Schaumburg’s softball team on Thursday. The Saxons’ sophomore fired a no-hitter, striking out eight of the 16 batters she faced in a 10-0 victory over visiting Prospect in 5 innings.

Sophomore Delilah Malczewski (3-0) threw a 2-hitter with 4 strikeouts and no walks. She faced 23 batters and got 10 on ground outs.

    Elk Grove’s Peter Arbov hit a ball off his ankle harder than he hit the ball to center field. Both were painful, but the one to center hurt Maine West even more. Arbov’s bases-loaded single scored Adam O’Malley to break a 3-3 tie as the Grenadiers held on to beat Maine West 5-4 Thursday in Elk Grove.

  • Hoffman Estates rallies but comes up short Apr 10, 2014 10:09 PM
    After falling behind 5-0 after two innings to visiting Addison Trail, Hoffman Estates gradually inched closer before falling 5-4 in the nonconference softball game. The Hawks got to within 1 run after 4 innings and had a runner on third base in the sixth and seventh innings.

    Adam O’Malley tossed a complete-game shutout and also had one of the Grens’ 2 hits in a 1-0 nonconference victory over host Wheaton North on Monday.

    St. Viator’s softball team ran its record to 7-2 on Tuesday with a 6-3 triumph over visiting Prospect in Arlington Heights. The Lions staged a 4-run sixth-inning rally to pull out the win as senior Sam Hogan (5-2) picked up the win.

    The Mid-Suburban West ruled at the Barrington softball quad on Saturday. Host Barrington and fellow conference mate Schaumburg each won their games over McHenry and Lane Tech. The Fillies topped McHenry 7-2 in their first game as junior Keenan Dolezal (5-2) earned the win for the Fillies (5-2) with 5 strikeouts.

  • York’s loving the great indoors, sweeps Maine West Apr 3, 2014 8:47 PM
    York leadoff batter Angela Scalzitti can’t wait to play some softball outside this spring. “Outside it’s such a different atmosphere,” said the DePaul recruit who plays center field. “I’m so excited to get outside.” But inside hasn’t been so bad for Scalzitti and the Dukes. After a 4-1 loss to powerful Benet on Tuesday at the Rosemont Dome, the Dukes were back in the weather-friendly facility on Thursday where they swept a pair of games from Maine West, 13-3 (6 innings) and 13-2 (5 innings).
