    Several Lindenhurst residents facing thousands of dollars in damages from a sewer backup into their homes may not receive any compensation from the village. The backup Monday caused several inches of waste to flood about six homes on Hazelwood Drive. "I'm not being reimbursed — I'm almost being punished,” said resident Todd Kurtz.

    For the 2011-12 Lake County Academic Team, high school was just the beginning, of what they hope will be lives of discovery, success, and service. "When I was in fourth grade, my uncle died from cancer," relates Jonathan Kersky, a team member from Stevenson High School. "It was at that early age that I decided I wanted to be an oncologist."

    It's not quite fair to say that Lakes shortstop Jamie Dykstra hadn't gotten the ball out of the infield heading into the fifth inning in Tuesday's regional contest with rival Antioch. Actually, she had walked and popped to the infield in two at-bats. And then she led off the fifth inning with a blast over the left-center field fence. Her solo homer opened the frame and sent her Eagles off to a 4-run rally — and Lakes needed all of those runs. The Eagles (24-12) will play for the Class 3A regional title Saturday morning against Grayslake North. The Eagles held off the Sequoits 5-4 at Antioch.
