  • Require bicycles to have horns Aug 23, 2014 1:01 AM
A Lake Zurich letter to the editor: This comment is in response to the article, ‘Bicyclists vs. bucolic suburb’. It is about time that someone addressed this issue.

  • U.S. must safeguard religious freedom of all Aug 22, 2014 5:01 AM
A Winfield letter to the editor: I joined all Americans in breathing a sigh of relief as we heard of the safe passage of Meriam Ibrahim and her family from our American Embassy in Sudan to New Hampshire and away from danger. Ibrahim, who was under a state death sentence for the past year for her conversion to Christianity, and who was forced to bear a child in a Sudanese prison, showed calm in the face of daunting circumstances.

  • Corporate tax rate in U.S. is too high Aug 22, 2014 5:01 AM
A Rolling Meadows letter to the editor: Sen. Dick Durbin is talking a lot now about economic patriotism, mainly regarding Walgreen and other companies that have considered moving headquarters overseas to lower corporate taxes. How about some congressional patriotism? Sen. Durbin has been in Washington forever, and I can’t remember a time he has called for tax reform to help U.S. companies.

  • Waukegan should back Clean Power campaign Aug 21, 2014 1:01 AM
A Waukegan letter to the editor: There was one glaring omission of support of the Clean Power Lake County campaign: No elected officials of the City of Waukegan signed the letter.

  • Keep Second Amendment to its original purpose Aug 21, 2014 5:01 AM
A letter to the editor: 99 percent of people do not want to carry guns. The Illinois law that prohibited concealed carry reflected the overwhelming consensus of the people, but a federal court overturned the law so that a small group could indulge their “Dirty Harry” fantasies. There is no credible evidence that any significant number of crimes are prevented by civilians carrying guns, but innocent people have been killed or injured by vigilantes.

  • Hurrah for Chicago’s winners on the field Aug 21, 2014 5:01 AM
A Mount Prospect letter to the editor: I firmly believe that the Jackie Robinson West Little League team could beat the Chicago Cubs on any given day — and draw a bigger crowd.

  • Health matters are between person, doctor Aug 21, 2014 8:06 AM
A Schaumburg letter to the editor: The Hobby Lobby ruling is an attack on women’s basic health care. The constitutional right is derived from an individual’s right to health care, whether the insurance company is paying for birth control, Viagra or heart medication.

  • Today’s laws unfair to past immigrants Aug 21, 2014 8:06 AM
A Rolling Meadows letter to the editor: I’m responding to the Aug. 4 letter regarding immigration from our southern border by Greg Hose (“Not border crisis, but humanitarian”). Mr. Hose doesn’t understand the meaning of country. The United States is defined by its borders, and without borders we have no country. By allowing anyone coming from our southern border to arrive here without filters and legal/medical inspections could be a recipe for virus epidemics.

  • Sharks unfairly demonized in media Aug 21, 2014 8:06 AM
A Glenview letter to the editor: This week is Shark Week. No creature has been demonized by movies, television and disinformation more than sharks. It has resulted in countless thousands of them being monstrously massacred by inhumane poachers, hunters and greedy profiteers who brutally kill them for shark fin soup. Many shark species are gravely imperiled.

  • Respect is vital to America’s success Aug 20, 2014 5:01 AM
A Mount Prospect letter to the editor: Bravo to Mr. Gene Maril of Arlington Heights. His Aug. 4 letter (“President’s critics unfairly labeled racist”) was right on the mark. So much hypocrisy these days. Instead of disagreeing respectfully and working together for best interests of our great nation, childish, unfounded accusations fly about.

  • GOP interested only in discrediting Obama Aug 20, 2014 5:01 AM
An Arlington Heights letter to the editor: If you are wondering why our Congress is so dysfunctional, perhaps you should Google this phrase: “Jan. 20, 2009 GOP meeting.” This GOP meeting took place in the Caucus Room at a Washington, D.C., restaurant and included 13 influential members of the Republican Congress and one nonmember — Newt Gingrich. Their project: How to bring Congress to a standstill regardless of how much it would hurt the American economy by pledging to obstruct and block President Obama on all legislation.

  • America is troubled — so do something Aug 20, 2014 5:01 AM
An Arlington Heights letter to the editor: The national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner,” is outdated. It was about the War of 1812. People can’t remember the words. We should adopt “America the Beautiful”; it describes our country. Or “God Bless America”; it reminds us that God cares and unfortunately we are pushing him away.

  • Look for miracles, not mistakes Aug 20, 2014 1:01 AM
A Lake Zurich letter to the editor: Conform to the teachings of the church? How about conform to the teachings of Christ? Now that is a radical idea.

  • ‘Only’ 6 years to let Bush off the hook Aug 19, 2014 5:01 AM
A Wheaton letter to the editor: What right does Commander-in-Chief Obama have to insert pre-emptive airstrikes and send ground troops into Iraq? Has Iraq’s democratically-elected leader Malaki asked for U.S. military aid? No. The Iraq military is doing its own airstrikes?

  • Using position to point fingers Aug 19, 2014 5:01 AM
A Carpentersville letter to the editor: I should have paid more attention to the endorsements of the Tribune and Daily Herald when each characterized the state senate career of Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen as quixotic.

  • Stop the exodus of jobs from Illinois Aug 19, 2014 5:01 AM
A Mount Prospect letter to the editor: In the Daily Herald on Aug. 12 there were two articles about companies closing branches in Illinois. Intuit is closing its Arlington Heights facility, and Jelly Belly is moving production to Fairfield, Calif.

  • Vote out politicians who have no guts Aug 19, 2014 5:01 AM
A Rolling Meadows letter to the editor: Durbin and the other politicians of this country, both state and federal, along with the media are playing us for dummies again. They make Walgreen out to be the bad guy to divert attention from the fact that they are too gutless to close the loopholes in the tax laws. Who were the people who wrote the laws to favor certain companies, and passed various corporate welfare laws in the first place? You’re right, the same politicians who will not stand up for simplifying and making our tax laws clearer and fairer for everyone.

  • Expect layoffs after Walgreen’s decision to stay Aug 19, 2014 5:01 AM
A Buffalo Grove letter to the editor: I agree totally with your conclusion, but not with other comments in your Aug. 8 editorial about Walgreen’s decision to stay in the U.S.

  • Dist. 87 flap about taking responsibility Aug 18, 2014 5:01 AM
A Wheaton letter to the editor: As a retired high school principal, I know from firsthand experience the difficulty developing and then administering an athletic/activity code that attempts to hold students involved in extracurricular activities accountable for their behavior.
