  • At long last: A zero star movie review Aug 27, 2014 12:01 AM
A Villa Park letter to the editor: My life is now complete. I’ve been reading Daily Herald movie reviews for years hoping to finally find one with zero stars. My lucky day came on Aug. 15 with the review of “Let’s Be Cops.”

  • Rauner property tax freeze a bad idea Aug 27, 2014 12:01 AM
A Carpentersville letter to the editor: Lately, Bruce Rauner, the GOP candidate for governor, has been decrying the high property taxes in Illinois. Well, I have news for Bruce. The highest property taxes are in the counties run by the Republicans.

  • Nothing Islamic about ISIS Aug 27, 2014 12:00 AM
A Lombard letter to the editor: ISIS self-proclaims to be “The Islamic state of Iraq and al-Sham.” However, the reality is there is nothing Islamic about ISIS. Innocent civilians are dying and minorities such as Christians, Yazidi, Kurdish and Shiites have been targeted by ISIS.

  • Company’s move is the ultimate statement Aug 27, 2014 10:35 AM
A Grayslake letter to the editor: Jelly Belly executives announced that production of the iconic jelly bean will no longer take place in North Chicago, where it has been produced for close to 100 years.

  • Politicians not doing what’s best for businesses Aug 26, 2014 5:01 AM
A Buffalo Grove letter to the editor: Sen. Dick Durbin and the Obama administration are upset that companies are considering “inversions,” in which a company moves its headquarters overseas to reduce taxes. Sen. Durbin’s immediate response is to create a bill to punish those companies. So rather than look for the root of the problem, he looks to penalize,

  • Illinois cannot afford to lose residents Aug 26, 2014 5:01 AM
A Barrington letter to the editor: Just read another study by the Illinois Policy Institute. Did you know that in 2012 Iowa’s median income surpassed Illinois’? Our income has collapsed by $12,000 in the last 15 years — ugh.

  • When will president work for us? Aug 26, 2014 5:01 AM
A Northbrook letter to the editor: He still doesn’t get it. After six years in office, President Obama thinks everyone in government works for him. In a recent press conference the president was asked if he felt that his presence in Ferguson. Mo., would help provide a calming influence. In responding to the query, President Obama pronounced that “the Department of Justice works for me” and that he did not want to have his presence in Ferguson seen as “putting his thumb on the scale.”

  • Property tax hikes on everyone’s mind Aug 26, 2014 12:01 AM
A South Elgin letter to the editor: Kudos to Linda Sobieski of Elburn and her letter, “Can’t Afford yet another tax increase.” This is a sentiment and a topic of conversation around Kane County and I’m sure other counties in Illinois.

  • Duckworth just another Democrat Aug 26, 2014 12:01 AM
A Bensenville letter to the editor: Tammy Duckworth has gone from respected war hero to just another Democrat — using class warfare to get votes. I suppose the hundreds of businesses and thousands of people who leave Illinois every year are deserters, because they go where taxes are lower.

  • Tax on bike owners makes no sense Aug 26, 2014 12:01 AM
A St. Charles letter to the editor: My fellow St. Charles resident Doug Eden in a letter to the editor suggested that bicyclists have some “skin in the game” — pay a tax to ride on the streets.

  • Accountability lacking on our leaders Aug 27, 2014 10:35 AM
A Barrington Hills letter to the editor: Jake Griffin’s column on the state agency ignoring the law showcases one of the glaring flaws in Illinois government; i.e. no one is accountable for making sure things are done right and apparently no one is responsible for being sure the state follows the law.

  • New meaning to ‘hope and change’ for Democrats Aug 25, 2014 5:01 AM
A Palatine letter to the editor: Though I’m an independent and try to see both sides of the argument, ya just gotta love those Democrats. Every time I turn on the TV, I see ads for Big Bad Bruce Rauner, the multimillionaire who doesn’t get us poor, regular folks. Why? Because he’s rich, rich, rich and has used our ridiculous tax system to pay less taxes than the liberal mindset thinks he should, even though it’s legal.

  • ‘Clean energy’ is losing its meaning Aug 25, 2014 5:01 AM
A Palatine letter to the editor: Currently no term is more abused than “clean energy.” First the coal industry stole the term “clean” as an adjective on the promise that carbon emissions can be captured as if the only thing that makes energy clean is whether carbon is emitted or not.

  • Fathers, be involved in your kids’ education Aug 25, 2014 5:01 AM
A Chicago letter to the editor: As children across our nation return to school, it saddens me to think of those who will embark on their journey without fathers to help them navigate. This is especially alarming as 24 million children live absent their biological father. I call it a journey because the route to school leads to the road of life, and children need paternal support to help navigate both.

  • Hamilton’s words are welcome commentary Aug 25, 2014 5:01 AM
An Elgin letter to the editor: Thank you, Daily Herald, for carrying the “Guest View” of Lee Hamilton. Hamilton, a former congressman from Indiana’s 9th District, is the director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University. When I ran for Congress in 1965 in Indiana’s 2nd District as a Democrat, Mr. Hamilton was running for Congress in the 9th as a Republican. He won. I didn’t. And he served through 1999.

  • Duckworth right on with ‘deserter’ comment Aug 25, 2014 5:01 AM
A Barrington letter to the editor: I support Tammy Duckworth completely when she says businesses that leave the USA to employ cheap labor are deserters. Tammy is right on two counts. First, any business that leaves America is depriving our citizens of their livelihood, which deprives the business of a market for their products, and the penalty for this should be that they lose their import license for this country. So they not only destroy the economy of this country, but they will eventually lose their profitability.

  • System perpetuates drug addiction Aug 25, 2014 5:01 AM
An Arlington Heights letter to the editor: Well, heroin use seems to be at an all-time high in these here suburbs. This is a serious problem, and sadly, the system is not set up to help

  • West is turning its back on Israel Aug 25, 2014 5:01 AM
A Wilmette letter to the editor: When anti-Semitism is so overpowering that the West condemns the only country ever to stand up to and defeat the jihadists, I can understand why Osama bin Laden predicted that the West did not have the stomach to engage in the battle and would be defeated.

  • Take note of pay for some school officials Aug 25, 2014 5:01 AM
An Elgin letter to the editor: Just read in the Daily Herald that the interim school superintendent for U-46, Kenneth Arndt, will be paid $650 dollars per day. And his second-in-command will get a salary of $210,000 per year.

  • Too few movies that uplift viewers Aug 25, 2014 5:01 AM
An Elk Grove Village letter to the editor: I disagree with movie critic HYPERLINK ""Jocelyn Noveck regarding “The Hundred-Foot Journey.” There are too few movies that are clean and have a feel-good ending. We need more movies that are entertaining and violence free.
