  • Larkin downs Rockford East Nov 24, 2014 10:24 PM
Larkin’s season-opening win against Rockford East was something like an accordion: Larkin would stretch the lead to double digits, then the E-Rabs would squeeze back into it only to watch the Royals extend the lead again. Larkin finished the game on one of those runs, outscoring the host E-Rabs 14-4 after East had gotten within 2 points to come away with the 79-67 victory in the inaugural game of the 205 Tipoff Classic in Rockford.

  • Larkin gets the message, tops Richmond-Burton Nov 22, 2014 6:39 PM
Larkin girls basketball coach Ruben Flores must have gotten his message across. Flores subbed all five players — including four starters — with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter Saturday afternoon, trailing Richmond-Burton 7-4. That group returned a minute later, down 10-6. The Royals outscored the Rockets by 10-4 the rest of the quarter and never trailed again in a 61-45 victory in Pool B play at the Burlington Central Thanksgiving Tournament.

  • Foul trouble, Harlem do in Larkin Nov 21, 2014 11:33 PM
The numbers game eventually caught up with the Larkin girls basketball team on Friday night. It was a case of too many fouls and not enough players on a depleted bench that contributed to a 58-46 loss to Harlem in second round action at the Burlington Central Thanksgiving Tournament. The game was tied 27-27 at halftime. However, both of the Royals’ starting guards, Marlee Kyles and Quixmia Washington, were limited in the second half because of foul trouble.

  • Fox Valley runners poised to make an impact at state Nov 5, 2014 6:43 PM
For Streamwood senior girls’ cross-country standout Gabby Juarez, it was time to play with the big dogs. Juarez adjusted her running strategy a bit this year and the results have been overwhelmingly positive. Juarez recently won a Class 3A sectional individual title and will try to add some more hardware to her collection at Saturday’s state finals race in Peoria at Detweiller Park.

  • Bartlett-Streamwood’s Filipek UEC 50, 100 champ Nov 1, 2014 9:48 PM
The 50-yard freestyle is the most unforgiving race in a swim meet. The race is often broken down as “a start, a flip turn and a finish.” But mess up on any of those three, or during the two lengths of the pool that comprise the race, and someone else wins. Bartlett-Streamwood’s Kayla Filipek was the best in the 50 freestyle at Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference meet at Waubonsie Valley. The sophomore covered the distance in 24.24, six-tenths faster than second-placed Samantha Sauer from St. Charles North.

  • Girls volleyball: Loyola handles Larkin Oct 30, 2014 9:21 PM
After getting past Rolling Meadows with relative ease in its opening match of the Class 4A Larkin regional on Tuesday, top-seeded Loyola Academy took another step toward a trip downstate on Thursday. Fighting off a pesky Larkin team, Loyola used strong serving at the end of each game to clinch a 25-15, 25-15 win for a Class 4A regional title.

  • Girls volleyball: Larkin to face Loyola for regional title Oct 28, 2014 9:27 PM
Up by 11 points in Game 2, Larkin’s girls volleyball team was poised to take the victory away from higher seeded Northside College Prep. Eleven points after that the Royals finally got to celebrate that victory, reaching the regional finals with a 25-16, 25-21 win in one semifinal of the Class 4A Larkin regional Tuesday night.

  • Jacobs’ Van Vlierbergen a regional champ Oct 25, 2014 6:46 PM
Lauren Van Vlierbergen, Gabby Juarez and Kelly Meehleib took the first steps toward Detweiller Park in Peoria on Saturday in convincing fashion. Van Vlierbergen, the Jacobs senior who finished fourth in the Class 3A state girls cross country meet last season, won the Class 3A Palatine regional Saturday while Juarez, Streamwood’s senior speedster who was 49th at state in 2013, was the individual champion at the Class 3A Glenbard North regional. Meehleib, a Huntley senior who did not qualify for state last year, was the champion at the Class 3A Rockford Guilford regional, also leading her team to the title.

  • Streamwood gets its revenge, regional title Oct 25, 2014 7:59 PM
Not long after the Streamwood boys soccer team was upset in last year’s regional semifinal as the top seed at Millennium Field, the mantra all along was nothing more than redemption. Seeing Larkin take home the regional hardware the Sabres believed was theirs was enough, but even when the critics stacked the deck against Streamwood this season, the team proved its doubters wrong by earning a top seed for the second straight year. And after Saturday’s 2-0 Class 3A Streamwood regional championship win over No. 3 Larkin, a two-time defending regional champ who had won 4 of its last 5 games, redemption is sweet.

  • Huntley’s Smith wins regional title Oct 25, 2014 7:41 PM
Huntley junior Keagan Smith beat the field on Saturday, winning the individual championship at the Class 3A Rockford Guilford boys cross country regional. Smith ran the course in a time of 15:03.22, almost 33 seconds better than Hononegah’s Jared Christiansen.

  • Seniors star in Geneva’s win over Larkin Oct 24, 2014 11:43 PM
In what amounted to a dress rehearsal for the Class 7A playoffs, Geneva put its seniors on display in the annual Senior Night regular-season finale Friday. Seniors scored all six Geneva touchdowns in a 42-6 Upstate Eight River romp over Larkin, putting the final touches on an 8-1 season (6-1 in conference) that puts the Vikings in the playoffs for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons.
