Two-time defending Upstate Eight River champion Larkin was eliminated from three-peat contention long ago, but that didn’t keep the Royals from having a say in which team inherits their crown. Make that teams, actually. Larkin forced 18 turnovers and scored regularly in transition to knock off Geneva 57-51 in the UEC River finale for both teams in Elgin on Wednesday.

The Maroons didn’t make it easy early on, but eventually the Royals pulled away for a 52-34 win to advance to play top-seeded Dundee-Crown on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

  • Dinkheller’s officiating career honored with IBCA Hall induction Feb 11, 2015 9:45 PM
Elgin resident Jim Dinkheller had modest goals when he enrolled in a basketball officiating class taught by late Elgin legend Pete Kovacs in 1980. Talked into the class by Kovacs, who taught the Elgin Community College-affiliated course at Elgin’s Kimball Middle School, Dinkheller figured he could officiate to stay in shape through the winter months and earn a little cash to boot. Little did the Larkin graduate know it would lead to a 34-year officiating career and his eventual induction to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The longtime referee learned last month he is one of eight officials slated for induction at this year’s IBCA banquet in May, a level of recognition he never expected.

  • Larkin holds off West Chicago Feb 5, 2015 11:25 PM
You could say Larkin center Daniel McFadden was down for much of the first half thanks to foul trouble in Larkin’s 80-71 Upstate Eight River win over West Chicago Thursday night. But that didn’t mean the Royals’ 6-foot-5 big man, nor their entire starting front line, was down and out by any means and an all too familiar scene flared up again in the third quarter for the Wildcats.

  • Elgin CC enjoying one of most successful seasons Feb 5, 2015 10:46 AM
Don’t expect the Elgin Community College men’s basketball players to start walking around with big heads now that the Spartans have cracked the top 20 national rankings.
