    Don’t expect the Elgin Community College men’s basketball players to start walking around with big heads now that the Spartans have cracked the top 20 national rankings. Checking egos at the door is the main reason this team is ranked in the first place. ECC (18-6), the No. 20 team in the Feb. 3 NJCAA Division II poll, is enjoying success because the Spartans enjoy sharing the ball, not to mention the credit, their coach says.

     
  • Freshmen shine in Geneva’s regional win Feb 4, 2015 10:13 PM
    Having first names that end in ‘y’ is not the only thing that Geneva’s five freshmen have in common. They’re also very, very good. Debuting in their first regional at Geneva on Wednesday, they combined to chip in with five counting scores as the Vikings cruised to victory with 146.425 points, easily surpassing the 130.85 tallied by U-46 co-op.

    Sometimes a simple strategy is the best option. Bypassing the 3-point shot for a medium-range jumper, St. Charles East’s girls basketball team gradually pulled away from Larkin in the second half Tuesday night in St. Charles. Senior guard Katie Claussner connected on 6 of her 7 second-half field goal attempts — most of them coming on midrange jumpers — while helping lift the Saints (16-7, 9-2) to a 65-53 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory.

     
  • Larkin’s dominance over Elgin continues Jan 31, 2015 1:11 AM
    The Larkin boys basketball team parlayed its dominance on the glass into a new level of dominance in the crosstown series against rival Elgin with a 75-55 victory at Chesbrough Field House on Friday. The taller Royals used their considerable height advantage to control the rebounding battle 39-22 and win their eighth straight against Elgin, thereby setting a record for consecutive Larkin victories in the series.

  • Cary-Grove’s Ruhland out with knee injury Jan 29, 2015 6:59 PM
    Cary-Grove senior Trevor Ruhland’s basketball season has likely ended due to a knee injury. Best known as a Notre Dame football recruit who started at offensive tackle in two state championship games for Cary-Grove, Ruhland (6-foot-4, 280 pounds) suffered a small tear in his meniscus while planting to set a screen during a 38-27 loss to Crystal Lake South last Friday.

    It was an inside-outside combination that Aurora Central Catholic couldn’t detain. Senior center Cece Rapp provided the inside presence for St. Edward with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots while Ryann Scully poured in 5 shots from beyond the arc in scoring 16 points, all in the first half. The Green Wave’s dynamic duo keyed a 61-39 win over ACC in Metro Suburban West girls basketball action in Elgin Thursday night.

     
  • Girls gymnastics: Mahoney injury tough loss for Prairie Ridge co-op Jan 28, 2015 6:32 PM
    State runner-up Prairie Ridge (a co-op team comprised of all the District 155 schools) heads into the girls gymnastics postseason looking to overcome a major loss to the team. Cary-Grove senior Riley Mahoney, one of the team’s top all-rounders, is out for the season after suffering a knee injury in early January. Mahoney suffered an injury to the other knee last year.

    Getting off to a good start on both end of the floor is usually key to winning any basketball game. Larkin’s girls did that at Chesbrough Field House Friday night and cruised to a 53-23 Upstate Eight Conference River Division win over city rival Elgin.

    There is certainly not a dearth of potential all-state wrestlers in the Upstate Eight Conference this season. Friday night at Geneva, St. Charles East, the defending tournament champion, and Metea Valley, on the cusp of its first Valley Division title in program history, advanced seven competitors to the semifinals on Saturday.

     
  • Wrestling: U-46 teams optimistic about UEC meet Jan 22, 2015 7:20 PM
    With February right around the corner, this is the time of year where high school wrestling kicks into high gear. Up first on the docket: conference tournaments, specifically Friday and Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference gathering at Geneva High School. All 16 UEC teams will compete for the team title and medals will be awarded to the five place-finishers in each weight class.

    Larkin point guard Charles Sanders admitted that after winning the Hinkle Holiday Classic to end 2014, he didn’t see the Royals’ 3-game losing streak coming. But what Sanders also admitted to coach Deryn Carter before Larkin took out Streamwood 70-53 in Upstate Eight River boys basketball action Thursday night in Elgin to get off the snide was that he needed to step up his senior leadership to right the Royals’ ship.

    A varsity basketball coach’s decision to play freshmen has its pros and cons. Sometimes a coach’s hand is willfully forced by the sheer athleticism or size of an incoming freshman. For example, anyone in the Fox Valley area who last year witnessed the play of 6-foot-5 Larkin forward Christian Negron, 6-8 Jacobs center Cameron Krutwig or Hampshire 6-3 forward Brennen Woods as freshmen understood those players belonged in their respective lineups from a physical standpoint.
