The bare truth: Lakes is a regional champ May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
In throwing the one-and-done monkey off its back, the Lakes baseball team got a hand. A bare hand. A ball that took a bad hop screamed towards Lakes first baseman Ryan Burnett on Saturday afternoon. He improvised and used his bare hand to field the ball and step on the bag. It was not only the most impressive out of the day, it was also the final out in Lakes' 3-2 regional championship victory over host Antioch. And it put to an end the Eagles' string of three straight first-round postseason tournament exits. Lakes will meet Grayslake Central in Class 3A sectional play Wednesday at Grayslake Central.

Helmich, Grant topple Cary-Grove May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
A nasty collision between Grant's Jared Helmich and Cary-Grove's Matt DiCicco at first base in the top of the seventh inning looked much worse than it actually was. "I tried to avoid the guy," Helmich said. "There was nothing I could do, I was going full speed I just couldn't get away from him." Luckily, both players eventually got up, dusted themselves off and continued on. But it was Helmich who would ultimately forget the pain. How so? He'd pitch the bottom half of the inning with a 2-run lead and close the Trojans out for a 4-2 Class 4A McHenry regional championship win. It's the Bulldogs' first regional win since 2001.

Vernon Hills, Stevenson move on to sectional May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Vernon Hills baseball coach Jay Czarnecki said Tyler Feece didn't have his best stuff Saturday. It was good enough, though. Feece found a way to get outs when he needed them in pitching the second-seeded Cougars to a 2-1 win over No. 7 Grayslake North in the championship game of the Class 3A Vernon Hills regional. Vernon Hills (28-7) advanced to the Grayslake Central sectional and will play at 4 p.m. Thursday against the winner of the Deerfield regional. No. 3 St. Viator and No. 10 Deerfield will play Monday.

Stevenson’s Bush blossoms in big win over Bloom May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Boys tennis coaches at state meets get to sit and coach courtside for the big matches, beginning with the quarterfinals. Assistant coach Jeff Zanchelli performed the duty for Stevenson at Friday's singles quarterfinal between Patriots junior Jeremy Bush and Hinsdale Central senior Sam Bloom at Hersey. Bush, seeded 5-8, thumped second-seeded Bloom 6-3, 6-1 in toasty Arlington Heights. The expression Bush wore while warming up for the match was identical to the one he sported during match point: placid. "I heard him breathing on (court) changeovers," said Zanchelli. "Even that was calm. Jeremy was so composed from the beginning of the match until the end, and he played with so much belief in himself." Mark Linnenberger, another Patriots assistant, also marveled at Bush's burning desire to remain cool. "Not once did Jeremy show a negative emotion in that match," Linnenberger said. "Not after missing a shot he should've made or after Sam hit a winner on a big point. Jeremy was in control and it showed — for the entire match. "That win," he added, "has to be one of the biggest wins in program history."
