Withstanding pressure is one of the keys to making a deep postseason run, and both the South Elgin and Wauconda softball teams got a taste of pressure in the opening game of the Bandits Jamboree on Saturday at The Ballpark in Rosemont. A pitchers duel between Wauconda's Kayla Wedl and South Elgin's Paige Allen ended in a 2-1 Bulldogs win in 8 innings.

Grant boys track and field coach Tom Evans spent Friday evening watching a parade of his Bulldogs qualify for next week's state meet in Charleston, but he continued pacing the infield nervously once the final event of the Class 3A Huntley sectional had concluded. Runner-up sectional finishes the previous two seasons tend to have that effect on a coach. Moments later his nervousness was replaced by excitement and pride as the North Suburban Conference champions were announced as sectional champions for the first time in school history. Grant garnered 83 team points to run away from Fox Valley Conference champion Huntley and NIC-10 Conference champion Belvidere North, which finished tied with 56 points.

Warren sophomore Brittny Ellis is back in the running for a state title. Or, rather two state titles, as she advanced near the front of the pack in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes in Class 3A. Ellis won her qualifying 400 qualifying heat in 55.18 on Friday in the girls track and field state meet preliminaries at Eastern Illinois University.

Trevor Ray held a small bundle of gift-wrapped goodies baked by Stephanie Rowells, wife of Lakes boys track coach Kurt Rowells, when a competitor stopped by to feed the speedy senior some sugary praise. It was none other than Ray's old middle-school relay teammate, Leroy Chapman of Antioch. "Mention that he beat me," Chapman said with a smile, as he patted Ray on the shoulders and back. "Smoked me." Chapman, who finished second to Ray in the 400-meter dash, wasn't the only one blown away by a Lakes runner. If this were a high school baseball game, it would have been called after five innings. Lakes piled up 144 points to capture Friday night's Class 2A Vernon Hills sectional. Defending sectional champ Grayslake Central (76 points) was way back in second. Vernon Hills (69), Antioch (52) and St. Viator (36) rounded out the top five.

What are the signs of a good team? Well, some good signs, for starters. The Wauconda baseball team put up two signs at its field in recent weeks, both of which signify, in their own ways, success and prosperity. The latest one is a biggie, and has become the team’s pride and joy. On Tuesday, the Bulldogs closed out their dominant run through the North Suburban Conference Prairie Division with a perfect 12-0 record, a feat that head coach Bill Sliker believes has never been done before in either the Prairie Division or the Lake Division. After defeating visiting Antioch 13-5 for that precious 12th win, the players were presented with a gift that perfectly captured the moment.

If they needed more convincing that their season was a fairy tale come true, Grant's softball players needed only to crane their necks. Look, up in the sky. "I was waiting for my catcher," Bulldogs pitcher Caitlyn Moran said. "And then I was like, Oh, look. There's a rainbow.' "It was great," Moran added. "It just added to everything." A rainbow, which included a definitive Grant red, appeared late in Wednesday's North Suburban Conference championship game in Zion, as the visiting Bulldogs were completing a thrilling, 3-2 win Zion-Benton.

There are plaques in the shape of baseballs, as well as the state of Illinois, plastered all over the press box at Mundelein. They commemorate just about everything: trips downstate, regional championships, conference championships and 20-win seasons. Now something new will be added to the press box, thanks to the events of Thursday afternoon. Surprisingly, the perennial power Mustangs had never before won baseball conference titles in back-to-back seasons. But they checked that off the list with their 5-1 win over visiting Wauconda in the North Suburban Conference title game.

Matt Vogt has been about as rock-solid as they come for Libertyville's baseball team the last two springs. The University of Minnesota-Duluth-bound senior displayed his talent again Wednesday, hitting a pair of home runs in the Wildcats' 14-0 win over Round Lake in a North Suburban Conference crossover. Vogt finished with 4 RBI, and Kevin Calamari also had a big day at the plate with a home run, double and 4 RBI, as Libertyville improved to 20-10.

Second-seeded Lake Zurich got its postseason off to a flying start, scoring 4 goals in the first half on its way to an impressive 7-0 victory over No. 3 Grant on Wednesday night in a regional opener at Barrington Community Stadium. Next up for the NSC champs will be the host Fillies in the regional final Friday after the home side stopped Round Lake 9-0 in the first match of the day.
