Full-throated Fobbe puts it all together for Stevenson May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Stevenson senior Jordan Fobbe has added a lot to his shot put style over the last few weeks, and with everything he has added, the shot just keeps going farther. So in time for his first throw in the Class 3A shot put event in boys track and field state preliminaries at O'Brien Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University, Fobbe added a loud grunt that has become ever-so-popular among shot put throwers. Whether it actually adds distance to the outcome remains up for debate, this much isn't: it worked on Friday for Fobbe. His first throw in the prelims was the best he has ever thrown the shot. The loud grunt was accompanied by an equally loud thud as the shot landed 56 feet, 7 inches from the ring. Another personal best throw marked an improvement of 10 feet over the last two weeks and a spot in the finals with the second-best toss from prelims.

Tough exit for Trumpis, Grant May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
Not even a bitter defeat could sour the sweet feelings Grant senior Jake Trumpis has for McHenry's Petersen Park. Trumpis certainly pitched well enough to win Wednesday night's Class 4A baseball regional semifinal duel with McHenry's Andrew Reisinger before a big crowd. The right-hander allowed only 4 singles and had 6 strikeouts and no walks as he threw just 73 pitches in 6 innings. But three perfectly placed singles in the top of the fourth inning and some stellar defense by No. 4 McHenry (23-14) sent Trumpis and top-seeded Grant (17-12) to a tough 1-0 defeat.

The Titans — who will play in Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional final against the winner of today’s game between No. 6 Lake Zurich and No. 11 Glenbrook North — snapped a 4-4 tie with 2 runs in the sixth inning. Mundelein (25-11) got a double from Lauren Fairweather.

Richter, Drain bring the pain as PR stops Grant May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
Mighty Maddie Drain delivered pain. Her Prairie Ridge softball teammate Marissa Richter provided a different kind of hurt an earlier inning. Leading off the bottom of the second inning of Tuesday’s Class 4A Grant regional semifinal, the 6-foot-2 Drain smacked a line drive that caught Grant pitcher Caitlyn Moran flush on the right thigh. The softball was sure to leave a mark of black-and-blue variety. For Moran, her pain wasn’t season-ending. When approached by the home-plate umpire to see if she was OK, the wounded ace, determined to keep playing, gave him a thumbs-up. In the first inning, Richter had touched Moran for a 3-run homer, propelling regional top seed Prairie Ridge to a 4-0 over No. 4 Grant in Fox Lake.

Sporting All The Benefits May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Do you think sports are all fun and games? While that is not incorrect, the truth of the matter lies in the obvious fact that a child who participates in a sport is offered far more benefits than just having an enjoyable time. Although some may argue participating in a sport is a distraction and a time consuming activity, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention declares otherwise. Childhood obesity has reached an all time high, doubling in children and tripling in adolescents over the past 30 years. In 2010, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. With obesity becoming such a prevalent issue, it is no fallacy that children need to increase their physical activity, and what better way to start then by participating in a sport.
