    Lake Zurich is making it look easy. The Bears took a 2-0 record into last week's Spring Break Tune Up Tournament at Hoffman Estates. After cruising past Huntley 10-1 and hammering an undermanned Fremd squad, 15-1, the Bears had plenty of optimism at Hoffman Estates and it shined through. The Bears pounced on West Chicago 13-2 won a hard fought 5-2 game against Warren, and blitzed a relatively new Taft team 16-0 to advance to the championship game where they dominated Bartlett, 10-2.

Batavia, Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake South, Crystal Lake Central, Dundee Crown, Hampshire, Huntley and Prairie Ridge are now IHSLA teams, as is Jacobs, which finished 18-0 last year while winning its second consecutive NILAX championship.

    St. Charles North's Jud Huxtable was still trying to get his bearings straight early Saturday morning during the inaugural Battle of Burgess at Geneva. Huxtable came to life late in the North Stars first game in the three-game round robin tournament, scoring the game winner as the final seconds ticked off the clock to beat Naperville Central, 6-5. He would also add two goals in the tournament finale, to lead the North stars to a 7-2 victory over Geneva. Although a champion was not officially crowned, the North Stars won the tournament with a 3-0 record, as they also defeated crosstown rival, St. Charles East, 8-3.

  • Bus carrying Vt. lacrosse team crashes in NY Mar 12, 2013 9:01 PM
    A bus carrying college lacrosse players from Vermont was hit Tuesday by a sports car that spun out of control on a wet highway in upstate New York, sending the bus toppling onto its side, police said. One person in the sports car died. The victim was a 64-year-old female passenger in the red Porsche that hit the bus, authorities said; the 65-year-old man who had been driving was in critical condition. Four players on the bus were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

  • Rosemont’s new athletic training facility drawing crowds Mar 2, 2013 5:30 AM
    The final piece of Rosemont’s athletic complex, the Dome at the Ballpark, is open and abuzz with activity, officials said Friday. The seven-story dome, located just north of the intersection of Balmoral Avenue and Pearl, encloses a 140,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art indoor baseball and softball arena that officials boast is the largest in North America.

  • Deal with Cubs brings more NU football to Wrigley Feb 5, 2013 3:39 PM
    The Cubs have a five-year plan to renovate historic Wrigley Field, and now Northwestern University has a plan to play five more college football games there and a longterm agreement to showcase the school's other sports teams there. Officials from Northwestern Athletics and the Cubs announced Tuesday they have joined forces for a marketing partnership that will include showcasing Wildcat teams at Wrigley Field in coming years, including baseball, lacrosse and football.

    J. Landis (Lanny) and Sharon Martin have committed $15 million to support Northwestern University's campaign for athletics and recreation, bringing the total of major gifts pledged in support of this campaign to more than $70 million, university officials announced Monday.

He was just a good human being."

Mersch scored four times to lead the Gold team to an 11-8 win over White in the IHSLA Class A boys lacrosse all-star game at West Chicago.

    Cary-Grove shut out Alex Crescenti and kept Jacobs scoreless for nearly 20 minutes during Saturday's NILAX championship at Aurora University. Still, it wasn't enough to upend the Golden Eagles. Jacobs senior Brenton Cosden broke a 7-7 tie, scoring his only goal of the game with just 3:20 remaining and the Golden Eagles would hold on for a 9-7 victory to win their second straight title and complete a perfect 18-0 season.
