  • Bus carrying Vt. lacrosse team crashes in NY Mar 12, 2013 9:01 PM
    A bus carrying college lacrosse players from Vermont was hit Tuesday by a sports car that spun out of control on a wet highway in upstate New York, sending the bus toppling onto its side, police said. One person in the sports car died. The victim was a 64-year-old female passenger in the red Porsche that hit the bus, authorities said; the 65-year-old man who had been driving was in critical condition. Four players on the bus were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

    The final piece of Rosemontís athletic complex, the Dome at the Ballpark, is open and abuzz with activity, officials said Friday. The seven-story dome, located just north of the intersection of Balmoral Avenue and Pearl, encloses a 140,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art indoor baseball and softball arena that officials boast is the largest in North America.

     
  • Deal with Cubs brings more NU football to Wrigley Feb 5, 2013 3:39 PM
    The Cubs have a five-year plan to renovate historic Wrigley Field, and now Northwestern University has a plan to play five more college football games there and a longterm agreement to showcase the school's other sports teams there. Officials from Northwestern Athletics and the Cubs announced Tuesday they have joined forces for a marketing partnership that will include showcasing Wildcat teams at Wrigley Field in coming years, including baseball, lacrosse and football.

    The St. Charles District 303 lacrosse community is mourning the loss of a 20-year-old assistant coach who died in a skateboarding accident. "There was not a bad bone in his body," said Huffman's father, Spencer Huffman. "He started playing lacrosse at a young age. He always loved it. ... His ultimate goal was he wanted to help people. He was just a good human being."

    Danielle Spencer, a two-time All-American in lacrosse and member of three NCAA championship-winning teams as a player at Northwestern (2007-10), will join head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller's staff as an assistant. Spencer spent the 2012 season as a first-year assistant coach at Stanford University.

    Waubonsie Valley's Connor Mersch really wasn't happy after losing to Lake Forest in the Class A semifinals last week. On Thursday, he helped Lake Forest coach Dan Maigler win an all-star game. Mersch scored four times to lead the Gold team to an 11-8 win over White in the IHSLA Class A boys lacrosse all-star game at West Chicago.

  • Jacobs holds off Cary-Grove for NILAX title Jun 2, 2012 6:10 PM
    Cary-Grove shut out Alex Crescenti and kept Jacobs scoreless for nearly 20 minutes during Saturday's NILAX championship at Aurora University. Still, it wasn't enough to upend the Golden Eagles. Jacobs senior Brenton Cosden broke a 7-7 tie, scoring his only goal of the game with just 3:20 remaining and the Golden Eagles would hold on for a 9-7 victory to win their second straight title and complete a perfect 18-0 season.

    It was raining lacrosse sticks and gloves and helmets Saturday afternoon in Palatine. Somewhere Tom Skilling was thinking, "Shoot, I should have added that to my forecast." The descending gear belonged to Knights on Grayslake North's boys lacrosse team. They had exuberantly tossed their equipment skyward after beating York 12-5 for the Lacrosse Cup state championship at Palatine High School's Chic Anderson Stadium.

     
  • Knights primed for state title appearance Jun 1, 2012 7:45 PM
    Grayslake North's boys lacrosse team will be playing for a state championship Saturday. The Knights (19-3) will battle in the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association Class B state title game at 3:30 p.m. at Palatine after beating visiting Sandburg 19-8 on a rain-soaked turf field Thursday night.

     
  • On to the semis for Grayslake North May 29, 2012 10:43 PM
    Grayslake North's boys lacrosse team advanced to the state semifinals in the Class B Lacrosse Cup series with a 14-5 win over Naperville Central on Tuesday. The Knights were led by University of Alabama-bound Matt Schlagetter with 5 goals and 3 assists. " Schlaggie,' as he is called by his teammates, was all over the field," Grayslake North coach Brad Fish said of the senior, who also picked up 9 groundballs. AJ Fish finished with 3 goals and 3 assists, while Brendan Walker added 3 goals and an assist. Rounding out the scoring for the Knights were Eric Palade, David Collins and Jack Mattea with a 1 goal apiece.

     
  • Stateís final four ready to roll May 27, 2012 6:46 PM
    Loyola, Hinsdale Central, New Trier and Lake Forest comprise the final four of the IHSWLA tournament. The semifinals are Wednesday at 5 and 7 p.m. at North Central College in Naperville, and the winners advance to Friday's championship at Northwestern.
