  • Point proved as Hasanov ties for bars title Feb 23, 2014 12:03 AM
Barrington sophomore Abby Hasanov came into the season looking to make a point. Last year, she qualified to the finals on the bars and vault but had to scratch due to a 103-degree fever, wiping out her chance at state glory. Needless to say, the Fillies sophomore had a bit of unfinished business. On Saturday at the girls gymnastics state meet in Palatine, Hasanov not only made her point, she added an exclamation mark to it. She tied for the state title on bars (9.5) and added a fourth-place medal on the floor (9.475).

  • Stevenson’s Weisberg wins — again Feb 22, 2014 11:38 PM
Alyssa Weisberg of Stevenson landed herself in some very good company after her performance in Saturday night’s finals of the high school girls gymnastics state meet at Palatine High School. Weisberg chalked up the state balance beam championship with a 9.65, winning the event for a second straight year. “I really don’t have words to describe all of this,” Weisberg said. “I don’t think exciting is the right word. I just think all of this is pretty cool.”

Midway through Saturday's girls gymnastics individual event championships at Palatine, Geneva freshman Claire Ginsberg was called to the awards stand for winning Friday's all-around title. She'd visit that same awards stand often.

  • Geneva’s Ginsberg steals the show Feb 21, 2014 11:45 PM

  • Patient Kehr an all-around success for Mundelein Feb 21, 2014 11:11 PM
Getting the opportunity to advance into the state finals was on the minds of many girls gymnasts during Friday’s preliminaries at Palatine High School. It was well worth the wait for Mundelein’s McKenzie Kehr, who will be among the competitors when the meet resumes at 5:45 p.m. Saturday. Kehr had to endure some extenuating circumstances on Friday before eventually learning that she’d finished eighth in the all-around with 37.075 and qualified first on the balance beam in a tie with Lyons’ Katie Carling.

  • Fremd in line for third-place trophy Feb 22, 2014 1:02 AM
Fremd and junior Christine Radochonski did not get off to the most promising start at the girls gymnastics high school state meet in Palatine on Friday. Radochonski, who was first up on the beam, the Vikings initial event, counted a fall in her routine. But the Vikings and Radochonski didn’t blink. Instead, they answered the challenge. Fremd had four individuals advance to the finals, helping the Vikings gain a solid grip on third place with 146.675 points. Radochonski came back from her beam performance to nail her floor routine (9.425) with the third-best qualifying mark.

  • All-arounders help MSL teams play winning hand Feb 20, 2014 6:24 PM
Fremd, Barrington, and Prospect have each punched their ticket to the girls gymnastics state meet, overcoming different challenges along the way. All three teams, though held one thing in common: an ace. Fremd senior Christine Jensen, Prospect junior Maddie Larock, and Barrington sophomore Abby Hasanov gave their teams a major boost during the season. And all three will be looking to make an impact at Palatine High School, where preliminaries in the individual events and finals in the all-around will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, with event finals and team trophies beginning at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

  • Jacobs’ Riedel has high hopes for state Feb 20, 2014 10:26 PM
Jacobs girls gymnast Allison Riedel did not have a 2012-2013 season to remember. Riedel suffered a Lisfranc injury at last year’s Fremd sectional that prevented her from competing in the state finals last year. “Basically I broke eight to 15 bones in my foot,” she said. “The main bone supporting my arch broke and the bones connected to the arch folded in. I had two surgeries and two wires and two screws put in. It was not a good injury. It was really hard watching the state meet last year knowing I should have been competing. The injury has only made me that much stronger of a gymnast.”
