  • Fremd wins MSL meet; Prospect’s Gonzalez claims all-around Jan 30, 2015 11:22 PM
    Prospect’s Olivia Gonzalez entered the Mid-Suburban League girls gymnastic meet as a wild card. The Knights senior left as an ace. Gonzalez, who has been dealing with a back injury for most of the season, certainly wasn’t affected by it on Friday night in rolling to the all-around title in tough field with a 37.60. “She dominated,” said Prospect coach Randy Smith of Gonzalez all-around effort. “She’s been dealing with back issues and it just shows what type of competitor she is.” Fremd may have not dominated, but the Vikings definitely did enough to get the job done, rolling to its 22nd MSL title with 146.15 points at Hersey’s Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

    State runner-up Prairie Ridge (a co-op team comprised of all the District 155 schools) heads into the girls gymnastics postseason looking to overcome a major loss to the team. Cary-Grove senior Riley Mahoney, one of the team’s top all-rounders, is out for the season after suffering a knee injury in early January. Mahoney suffered an injury to the other knee last year.

The Viking senior girls gymnastics standout has been a state finalist the past three seasons, including a third-place medal on bars her freshman year. She put the finishing touches on a sensational night for Fremd, nailing a near-flawless beam routine to take first place with a 9.8 and helping lead the Vikings to the Mid-Suburban West title with a season-best 148.95 on Thursday at the Conant crossover triangular meet in Hoffman Estates.

    Prospect girl’s gymnastics team was missing half of its one-two punch on Wednesday night, but senior Maddie Larock delivered a knockout for the Knights anyway. Prospect all-arounder Olivia Gonzalez was held out of the meet due to back issues, but Larock was solid from start to finish in winning the all-around (37.3) and leading the Knights to a Mid-Suburban East title with a triangular victory with 138.10 points at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. Host Hersey took second with a season best 136.20, followed by Buffalo Grove (130.30).

  • Geneva’s season-best beats St. Charles Jan 21, 2015 9:49 PM
    Geneva freshman Lily Chapman scored a 9.05 on floor and an 8.85 on vault during Thursday’s Upstate Eight meet against St. Charles co-op in Geneva. As impressive as those two scores were, they weren’t good enough to count toward the Vikings team total. That’s just how good Geneva was in a 148.4 to 145.95 victory.

  • Warren’s Basara on winning path Jan 17, 2015 6:57 PM
    Emily Basara opted to join Warren’s girls gymnastics team, and she’ll eventually compete collegiately at Northern Illinois. On both levels, she’s following the lead of Warren graduate Kim Gotlund. And Basara is also achieving at a level similar to that of Gotlund, who finished high school as the state all-around champion. On Saturday, Basara hit a career-best in winning the all-around with a 38.20 and also had her best vault (9.87) at the Lake County meet held at Lake Forest High School.
