  • Prospect’s Garmoe, Gavin and St. Viator’s Carlson make state Oct 13, 2014 8:54 PM
While their respective teams didn’t achieve Monday’s ultimate goal, bittersweet individual berths will certainly do. The Prospect duo of Robert Garmoe and Grant Gavin, and St. Viator’s Nick Carlson punched their tickets to the Class 3A state finals during a tough New Trier Class 3A sectional at Winnetka Golf Club. Garmoe and Carlson each fired a 3-over par 74 to tie for fourth place with three others, while Gavin made the cut via a five-way tie for 16th at 6-over 77.

  • Lillie leads St. Charles North to runner-up sectioanl finish Oct 13, 2014 11:29 PM
It was a scramble from start to the finish at the Conant girls sectional golf meet at Fox Run in Elk Grove. Maine South won the team title with a 328, while St. Charles North was second with a 331. The scramble began at third place, where both Wheaton Warrenville South and Oak Park tied with a 337. Wheaton Warrenville South was awarded the final team spot at this weekend’s Class AA state finals based on the fifth score, as Emma Field’s score was lower than the 101 from Oak Park’s Sophie Mouros. Tying for the 10th and final individual qualifying berth were Glenbard West’s Samantha Moody, Elk Grove’s Erin Walz, Lake Park’s Nicole Hansen and Burlington Central’s Josie Kurosky. Each shot an 84 - they will try to settle the issue with a playoff beginning at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

  • Another good day for Glenbard South Oct 13, 2014 8:28 PM
There have been a lot of good days to be a Glenbard South Raider on a golf course lately, and Monday was no different.

  • Grayslake Central boys golf sectional suspended Oct 13, 2014 8:28 PM
Mother Nature was the only winner Monday at the Class 2A Grayslake Central boys golf sectional. After waiting through a 1 hour and 20 minute rain and lightning delay at Stonewall Orchard Golf Club, tournament officials suspended play with 52 players still on the course, some with as many as five holes to complete. Play will resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday with each of the 52 players having marked their last shots when play was suspended.

  • Lim, Barrington soak up a state-qualifying success Oct 13, 2014 8:26 PM
Timothy Lim wasn’t alone in having to deal with the rainy, foggy and wet conditions as the day went on Monday in the Class 3A Lake Forest boys golf sectional. But it sure didn’t seem to affect him as much. The Barrington sophomore used a steady approach to get past the weather conditions and card an even-par 72 on the 6,589-yard course at Lake Bluff. Lim’s effort helped Barrington shoot 299 for the second straight time as the Broncos earned a spot in the Class 3A state touranment. They finished second, behind Lake Forest (293) and ahead of St. Charles East (306) — or at least it looks that way, pending the official conclusion of the sectional now scheduled for Tuesday.

  • St. Edward’s Scully qualifies for girls golf state again Oct 11, 2014 10:20 PM
After shooting an 8 on the first hole of the Class A Watseka girls golf sectional at Shewami Country Club Saturday, St. Edward senior Ryann Scully had to be wondering if she’d be playing golf downstate next weekend or softball in a college exposure tournament in Elgin. Don’t put the golf clubs away just yet, Ryann.

  • Pieces all in place for Hawks practice facility near UC Oct 9, 2014 9:33 PM
A long 3-pointer from the Bulls new practice digs sits a lovely parking lot (which I adore for its convenience), but which I’m thinking will eventually become home to a brand-new, sparkly Blackhawks practice facility. And it should.

  • Libertyville edges Carmel for regional title Oct 8, 2014 10:25 PM
In a girls golf season that has seen both teams win conference championships, Carmel Catholic and Libertyville took aim Wednesday at flexing flagsticks, not necessarily each other, despite the proximity of the two schools. “It’s not what you might think,” Libertyville coach Greg Pedersen said with a laugh. “No war on (Rte.) 176 or anything like that.” Libertyville won the friendly battle, the Class AA Carmel regional, on a gusty day in Waukegan. Led by medalist Simone Mikaelian’s 83, the North Suburban Conference-champion Wildcats carded a 344 to best runner-up Carmel (364) by 20 strokes at Bonnie Brook Golf Course.

  • WW South’s Anderson repeats at regional Oct 8, 2014 8:49 PM
Wheaton Warrenville South’s Kelly Anderson didn’t mind missing school for Wednesday’s Class AA Glenbard West regional, but she was much more excited to be golfing than have the excused absence.

  • St. Charles N. wins title, but Batavia surprises field Oct 8, 2014 7:42 PM
Batavia senior Lauren Anderson really had no idea when she sat down at the scorer’s table Wednesday what her round of 90 would mean to her team. But when she found out she was all smiles, as was the entire Bulldogs’ contingent. For the first time since winning back-to-back regional titles in 2008 and 2009 and a runner-up regional finish in 2010, Batavia will play as a team in the sectional.

  • Sulkar, Barrington lead the way in Lake Forest regional Oct 8, 2014 10:16 PM
There was plenty of drama at Wednesday’s conclusion of the Lake Forest regional at Deerpath Golf Club in Lake Forest. When the final scores were entered in the clubhouse, the Fillies were one stroke better than Deerfield (359 to 360) to win their 15th title in 28 seasons under Hall of Fame girls golf coach Jodi Schoeck.“It was thrilling when we realized that we had won it,” Schoeck said. “When we saw the scoreboard was completed, it was a sigh of relief because we were not sure what was going to happen.”

  • St. Edward’s Scully advances to sectional Oct 8, 2014 9:33 PM
Ryann Scully will have a story to tell her kids and grandkids about one hole she played during the Class A Genoa-Kingston girls golf regional at The Oak Club Wednesday. What Scully can do, though, is tell a story in which she had an 18 — yes, an 18 — on a hole and still qualified for the sectional. “On the ninth hole I got into the sand by the green in two (shots),” Scully said, “and it was all downhill from there. It took me 12 shots to get out of that sand.”

  • Accardi gives sectional qualifier Prospect a lift Oct 8, 2014 8:55 PM
Sabrina Accardi carded a personal-best score of 83 to complement senior Kacie O’Donnell (82), sophomore Kate Ponzi (93), and 94s from seniors Sammy Minasian and Emma Dazzo to give Prospect (352) the third and final sectional qualifying spot behind Loyola (335) and New Trier (338) at the Glencoe Golf Club in Class 2A regional play on Wednesday. In one of the toughest regionals in the state, Fremd junior JaeHee Hur took medalist honors with a 4-over par 76 on a windy but warm afternoon in Glencoe.
