For a year and a half, Timothy Brennan has been a regular at Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, faithfully playing the slots with the hope of winning big. Brennan recently hit the jackpot. But it was something more valuable than all the money the casino could ever pay out — a kidney donated by casino valet employee Jaime Maldonado. "I just couldn't catch a break ... and here this angel comes along," Brennan said.

Prospect Heights bistros seeking video gambling permits, owner says Feb 12, 2013 12:00 AM
Three new bistros planned for Prospect Heights will target an “upscale” clientele, serve only patrons over 21 years old and seek video gambling permits from the state, a partner in Blackhawk Restaurants told the city council Monday. The restaurants, called Penny’s, will serve soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts and will request city licenses to serve beer and wine.

Both villages have heard a proposal from Loredo Hospitality about building a new business called Stella's that will offer a "small plate" menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner to go with video gambling. "We're basically a cafe for adults to grab a bite, grab a drink and play slots or video poker," said the developer.

The village council this week said it will wait at least a year before reconsidering Palatine's current ban. Ron Yurcus, a retired hospice chaplain, discovered the Powerball ticket a few weeks ago. “About 12 tickets had accumulated on my desk, and I decided to tidy up to make room for my new computer,” he said. “I checked the winning numbers on the Illinois Lottery website and just about screamed when I saw that I won.”

Since the storm hit, he had been stuck at home with intermittent electricity. When he heard that gaming tables were reopening yesterday, he drove about 50 miles from Lacey Township, New Jersey, straight to the casino.
