    Illinois authors who have self-published an adult fiction book may enter the second year of the Soon to be Famous Illinois Author project until Monday, Dec. 15. The Soon to be Famous Illinois Author project is being coordinated in collaboration with the Illinois Library Association and Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) and is supported by the American Library Association Digital Content Working Group, the Public Library Association (PLA), Illinois Heartland Library System.

    By 1945, at the end of WWII, less than three percent of American military personnel were women. Barbara “Bobbie” Merritt was one of them. A resident of Sedgebrook, a senior living community in Lincolnshire, Bobbie achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer inthe Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), serving in Arlington, Virginia.

    As part of the continuing 100th anniversary of their school, the Antioch Community High School Fine Arts department is proud to present “Who Will Carry The Word” as their fall production. Written by Holocaust survivor Charlotte Delbo and drawing upon her memoir, “Auschwitz and After”, the play depicts the lives of 20 non-Jewish women who were part of the French resistance sharing a barracks in Auschwitz.

    Three teachers are facing misdemeanor charges alleging they failed to report suspicions that a Gavin School District 37 instructor was abusing a student. Two were arrested Thursday. The third remained at large as of Thursday night.

    Bill Sayles in Fox Lake kept this April 7, 1944, V-Mail from his brother, Robert D. Sayles, written to their mother from “Somewhere in North Africa.” He writes, “This letter is one of many saved to and from family members during WWII. We are in the process of putting them in order in a binder to get a complete picture of what life was like at home and at the front during WWII.”
