  As the heat rises and summer fever kicks in, numerous suburban pools and water parks are beginning to open. While some water parks won't open until area schools get out, others are opening for the holiday weekend.   Schaumburg Boomers a hit with 5,000 fans May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
  The return of professional baseball to Schaumburg — after a nearly two-year hiatus — proved to be as successful in the stands as it was on the field Friday night. A crowd of more than 5,000 mostly orange-clad fans cheered the Schaumburg Boomers on to their first home victory, beating the Florence Freedom 5 to 2.
  

   

• Maine South edges West in classic duel May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
  Maine West's James Duckmann and Maine South's Patrick Aloisio battled each other into the 10th inning in a classic pitcher's duel in the 4A Maine West regional final. But a bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th helped top-seeded Maine South escape with a 3-2 victory.
  

   

• No early exit for Conant this year May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
  Last year Conant's softball team checked out of the postseason early, falling to Leyden in the regional championship game. This year, the Cougars are looking for an extended stay and they took a step forward on Saturday. Conant senior pitcher Briana Cavin held Hersey's bats in check while leading the Cougars to an 8-1 victory in the Hoffman Estates Class 4A regional title game. Top-seeded Conant (32-3) won its fourth overall regional title and first since 2005 in advancing to Wednesday's Barrington Class 4A sectional semifinal at 4:30 p.m. against No. 4 Barrington (30-7).

  St. Viator students raise $10,000 for Mercy Home May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
  Students at St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights raised $10,000 in this year's Lenten Campaign, and chose to give it to the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago. "Thank you. You change the lives of our children through your generosity," said the Rev. L. Scott Donohue, a 1972 graduate of St. Viator and current CEO of Mercy Home.

  COD, faculty reach tentative contract deal May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
  Negotiating teams for the College of DuPage and the school's faculty association have reached a tentative contract agreement — just days before a contract imposed by COD's board of trustees was set to take effect. The deal was struck just after midnight Saturday — the result of bargaining sessions on Thursday and Friday that lasted a combined 25 hours, said Faculty Association President Glenn Hansen.

• Elk Grove meets Schaumburg’s challenge May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
  Two bullets, a dominant pitching performance and a vacuum cleaner at second base helped Elk Grove capture a regional softball championship Saturday afternoon. The bullets were line-drive homers off the bat of Krista Soesbe in the first inning and Devan Parkison in the second. Soesbe's 3-run job erased a 2-run deficit and Parkison's padded the lead just enough for Dani Goranson to settle down and deliver the dominant pitching for which she has become known. As for the vacuum cleaner, that was second baseman Becca Maher. She handled four straight chances from the fifth inning into the sixth, including a diving stop that might have ignited a Schaumburg rally in the sixth and preserved a 6-2 Class 4A regional title win at Elk Grove. The Grenaders (28-8) will meet Fremd in a Barrington sectional semifinal Thursday.
  

   

• Elk Grove Village can lead by example May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
  Letter to the editor: Dan Vincent will pay the higher water and sewer fees recently imposed, but suggests Elk Grove Village lead the way on water conservation. "I ask that the city and the park district do the same by turning off the automatic sprinkler systems that water all the greenery, even in the rain, to set the example," he writes.
