    St. Viator students raise $10,000 for Mercy Home May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
    Students at St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights raised $10,000 in this year's Lenten Campaign, and chose to give it to the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago. "Thank you. You change the lives of our children through your generosity," said the Rev. L. Scott Donohue, a 1972 graduate of St. Viator and current CEO of Mercy Home.

    Barrington's AJ Scarbrough is usually smiling and he had a good reason for it during Friday's Class 3A state track prelims in Charleston. Scarbrough set a school-record in the triple jump and leads the field going into Saturday's finals. Hersey's Mark Balmes also advanced in the shot put and discus and Conant's Ben Bowers qualified in the high jump and 110 hurdles.

    A bend-but-don't-break philosophy served the St. Viator girls soccer team well Friday night in the Class 2A Lakes sectional final. The top-seeded Lions' offense struck early against No. 2 Lake Forest, and the St. Viator defense held on in the end for an exciting 1-0 victory and a berth to the Barrington supersectional next Tuesday. St. Viator (14-8-4) will face Belvidere sectional champion Freeport at 5 p.m., while the Scouts closed out their season with a 16-5-2 record.

  • Hazmat crews in Des Plaines determine materials not a threat May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
    Hazardous materials crews determined that suspicious liquids and materials discovered in a Des Plaines house during the course of a drug investigation Friday were determined to be benign. Police were conducting their investigation on the 200 block of Norman Court when they found the unknown chemicals and called the fire department for backup at 3:27 p.m., according to Fire Chief Alan Wax.

    They have different backgrounds and different passions, but the high school seniors named to the Northwest Suburban Daily Herald Academic Team share the conviction it is their duty to contribute to society.     Two balcony fires in Mount Prospect were blamed on cigarettes. At cigarette probably set a wooden balcony, vinyl siding and plastic chair on fire at an apartment on the 2300 block of Colony Drive around 1:30 p.m. May 16. Damage was estimated at $600. A lit cigarette may also have caused a balcony fire at an apartment on the 1700 block of Forest Cove Drive around 11:35 p.m. May 22. Damage was estimated at $2,000.

    Barrington’s Coll-Parekh still in front draw May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
    George Coll and Varun Parekh took a giant stride toward their intended destination in the boys tennis state tournament Thursday. The Barrington duo won their first three doubles matches on their home courts to stay alive in the front draw and gain a spot in the fourth round of championship bracket play Friday morning. The Mid-Suburban League champs will meet 3-4 seed New Trier (Alex Mang-Arthur Ozga) at 9 a.m. today in Buffalo Grove in what promises to be an entertaining and exciting second day of the 97th state series. Tournament favorites Hinsdale Central and New Trier lead the pack in the team race with 24 and 22 points, respectively, with Lake Forest a surprise at 22 points. Oak Park-River Forest (20) and Stevenson (17) are right there in the team race, too.

    Matt Swanson threw a 7-hitter as Maine West topped Lane Tech 7-1 in the Maine West Class 4A regional semifinal. Elk Grove and Rolling Meadows couldn't hold early leads in 4A losses and Leyden advanced to the regional final.
