    It took Davante Gardner almost two years to get back into the starting lineup and the bulky Marquette forward certainly made the most of the opportunity. Gardner scored 21 of his career-high 28 points in the second half, leading Marquette to a 66-56 victory over DePaul on Saturday.

    Markel Starks was aggressive on offense throughout the Georgetown Hoyasí New Yearís Eve game against DePaul. When the Hoyas were sluggish in the first half, he kept them in it. When they pulled ahead to stay after intermission, he led the way.

    Billy Garrett Jr. scored the game-winning basket as time expired to lift DePaul to a 57-56 win over Northwestern on Friday night. A 3-pointer with 4.9 seconds left had given Northwestern (7-6) a 56-55 lead. Sandi Marcius finished with 12 points and Cleveland Melvin added 11 for DePaul (8-5).

  • DePaulís January earns Big East hoops honor Dec 23, 2013 4:37 PM
    DePaul freshman guard Jessica January was named the Big East Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday. The Richfield, Minn. native, averaged 10.0 points per game in DePaulís four wins last week. January scored 12 points in victories over Pittsburgh and Louisiana-Monroe. The freshman had a career-day against ULM and recorded a team-best and career-high eight rebounds. She also added a season-high four steals and two, 3-pointers. January averaged 23.0 minutes, shot .378 (14-of-37) from the floor and added 4.5 rebounds per game. One of the first options off the bench for the Blue Demons, January helped DePaul to the Duel in the Desert title with wins of Pittsburgh, Washington and ULM. The Blue Demons also defeated Dartmouth last week. St. Johnís guard, Aliyyah Handford was named the leagueís Player of the Week.

     
  • DePaul clips Chicago State Dec 15, 2013 7:08 PM
    Billy Garrett Jr. scored eight points in overtime as DePaul beat Chicago State 77-70 on Sunday, barely continuing their dominance of the Cougars. Tied at 62, Chicago State (4-6) had a chance to take the lead with 17 seconds left in regulation but Quinton Pippenís running 3-pointer from the left wing was long, and DePaul rebounded. Cleveland Melvin then had a chance to win the game for DePaul, but his lay-up attempt with three seconds remaining was blocked, sending the game to overtime. The Blue Demons then scored the first six points of the extra session, before closing out the game to beat Chicago State for the 12th straight time. Melvin scored 18 and Garrett had 17 for the Blue Demons (6-4), who have won two straight after losing three of four. Melvin, playing in his 100th career game, also passed Dallas Comegys (1,613) for seventh on the schoolís all-time scoring list is nearing Stephen Howard (1,691) for sixth. DePaul led by as many as 12 in the second half but Chicago State took the lead 59-58 with 5:10 left on a Matt Ross 3-pointer, capping off an 11-0 run. Chicago State then went ahead for the last time on Corey Grayís 3-pointer with 1:21 remaining, before Brandon Young made a free throw to tie the game at 62. DePaul is in the middle of a stretch of three games in seven days, wrapping up when it hosts Houston Baptist on Wednesday. The Cougars were led by Pippen and Nate Duhonís 18 points. After starting 2-1, Chicago State has lost five of seven and plays again Monday when it hosts Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Chicago State shot only 39 percent from the floor, and shot 13 free throws compared to DePaulís 40. That all helped the Blue Demons continue their control of Chicago State. With Sundayís win, DePaul improved to 12-0 all-time against the Cougars, whom they had beaten by an average of 23.5 points per game entering Sunday. DePaul also improved to 18-1 against current members of the Western Athletic Conference, which Chicago State joined before this season. Sundayís game was also the Cougarsí first in eight days, following their 90-81 win last Saturday over Wisconsin-Parkside. Chicago State, winners of the final Great West Conference tournament last season, has already faced Indiana and Illinois and is scheduled to play at Cincinnati and Creighton before opening its first WAC season Jan. 4 when it faces Idaho.

    This is the Megan Rogowski everyone at Hersey High School remembers. The 5-foot-9 Rogowski came off the bench for the Blue Demons as a freshman and sophomore, but now she's starting at off-guard and putting the ball in the basket with the kind of success she had when she scored a school-record 2,365 points at Hersey, where she holds 11 school records.

    Cleveland Melvin scored 19 points and DePaul beat the Florida Atlantic Owls 81-70 on Thursday night at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, giving the Blue Demons their 1,400th win in program history. Sandi Marcius added a career-high 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Billy Garrett added 14 for the Blue Demons, who had lost three of four. DePaul (5-4) also started a stretch of three games in seven days, which picks up Sunday when it hosts Chicago State and then Houston Baptist on Wednesday. Melvin recovered from a rough outing last Friday against Arizona State, when he shot 2 of 12 for seven points in DePaulís 78-56 loss. On Thursday, he shot 7 for 13 for the Blue Demons, who were 32 of 61 (52.5 percent) as a team during their first game in six days. Brandon Young, DePaulís leading scorer, was back in the lineup after missing last Fridayís game with a sprained ankle and had 12. Marcius, a senior forward, topped the career high he set Dec. 1 against Oregon State when he scored 15 points on 6 of 6 shooting Florida Atlantic (3-7) was led by Pablo Bertoneís 30 points, and Jackson Trapp had 17. The Owls had won two straight over Central Florida and Jacksonville after six consecutive losses, but couldnít push their winning streak to three despite shooting 45.5 percent. Bertone, the reigning Conference USA player of the week, hit 11 of 22 and couldnít help the Owls overcome a 38-29 rebounding deficit before fouling out with 11.7 seconds remaining. Florida Atlantic was also looking for its first win somewhere other than its Boca Raton campus, but dropped to 0-7 away from home. DePaul, meanwhile, is trying to reverse the programís decline but reached a milestone Thursday. A one-time power, the Blue Demons extended their all-time record to 1,400-905. They havenít been to the NCAA tournament since 2004, and arenít expected to contend for another this season out of the new-look Big East. On Thursday, they overcame a slow first-half start but still managed to lead going into the break. Florida Atlantic took an eight-point lead with 6:08 left in the half on a Bertone free throw, but the Blue Demons ended the period on a 17-8 run, capped off by Melvinís tip-in of his own layup to beat the buzzer. DePaul took its first double-digit lead with 2:37 left on Garrettís 3-pointer, but the Owls got to within seven on a Bertone three-point play 21 seconds later. That, though, was as close as Florida Atlantic got.

    Playing its fourth game in five days proved to be too much for Milwaukee, even coming off a four-game winning streak. The Panthers, who finished in last place last season in the Horizon League, stayed with DePaul most of the way in their home opener Tuesday. But fatigue, plus superior play from a Big East foe in the Blue Demons, conspired against them.

    Cleveland Melvin scored 20 points and Brandon Young added 19 as DePaul pulled away in the second half for an 80-71 win over Milwaukee on Tuesday. It was the first road win of the season for the Blue Demons (3-1). The Panthers (4-2), who had won four straight, lost their home opener.

    Prized freshman guard Billy Garrett Jr. had his pick of colleges coming out of Chicago's Morgan Park High School. Garrett chose DePaul, and the challenge now is leading a dismal program back to prominence. On Wednesday night, the prized recruit played his first game at the Allstate Arena with the Blue Demons in front of a scant crowd of 5,840.

    Freshman Tommy Hamilton IV scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in his college debut to help the DePaul Blue Demons to a 96-58 victory over Grambling State in their season-opener at McGrath-Phillips Arena on Saturday. Senior Cleveland Melvin poured in a team-high 17 points, knocking down all five of his 3-point attempts.
