    JourneyCare is offering area youth an opportunity to learn more about Martin Luther King’s Day of Service and actively engaging in a community project to honor this legacy. Through the "Soup & Stories" initiative developed last year, volunteers from fourth grade through high school delivered warmth and comfort to the homes of JourneyCare patients and families on Martin Luther King Day, delivering care packages containing homemade fleece blankets, conversation cards and a container of homemade chicken soup.

    Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program recently announced it will award nearly $400,000 in scholarships and prizes to more than 2,500 students who have made a positive impact on their communities. Nominations for kids, age 6 to 18, will be accepted Jan. 30 to March 13 at kohlskids.com. “Children around the country are doing inspiring work in their communities every day and Kohl's is proud to reward these future leaders through the Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program,” said Bevin Bailis.

    High school students can learn more about the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at “Explore ACES” on March 13-14. This student-run event introduces both prospective and admitted students to ACES faculty, academic offerings, and student organizations. More than 100 exhibits showcase academics, research, and student development opportunities. Students can also learn about study-abroad programs, how ACES graduates are using their degrees, and tips on applying for more than $2.5 million in scholarships within the College of ACES.

  • Ponzi scheme nets N. Barrington man 25-year prison sentence Jan 29, 2015 4:28 PM
    A 55-year-old North Barrington man was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to operating a Ponzi scheme that bilked 455 investors out of $105 million. Federal prosecutors said Daniel Spitzer targeted the elderly in his investment scheme. Spitzer's former underling, Alfred Gerebizza, 59, of Crystal Lake, was convicted of fraud after a trial this past summer.

     
  • Pedestrian hit by car in Crystal Lake Jan 29, 2015 8:17 PM
    A 39-year-old woman had to be taken to the hospital by helicopter after being hit by a car Thursday in Crystal Lake, officials said. Crews were called to the intersection of Gates Street and Second Street around 1:30 p.m. for the car-vs.-pedestrian crash, according to a news release.

    Although not all of the activities associated with Woodstock Groundhog Days are linked to the movie “Groundhog Day,” starring Bill Murray, the film is the focus of the city’s festival, which starts Thursday, Jan. 29 and runs through Monday, Feb. 2. “The movie was the catalyst. There was no Woodstock Groundhog Days before the movie came out in 1992,” said Rick Bellairs, member of the Woodstock Groundhog Days Committee.

    Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois is offering “Frosty Frolic” to all local families who want to experience winter camping together. Families, couples, and small groups are invited to bundle up and explore Mary Ann Beebe Center in Harvard from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. Activities will include sledding, cross country skiing, and snowman building. Cost is $10 per youth or $5 per adult. Registration is open and ends Monday, Feb. 9.

     
  • Illinois State student hit by vehicle dies; Lombard man charged Jan 28, 2015 12:26 AM
    An Illinois State University student from Crystal Lake died Tuesday after he was struck by a vehicle in Normal, Illinois, last week, The Associated Press reports. McLean County Coroner Kathleen Davis said Benjamin Allison, 20, died at the hospital.
