A woman picked up a backpack at Kohl's in Mount Prospect, put merchandise valued at $600 in it and hid a denim jacket under her coat. She placed the backpack in a shopping cart and wheeled the cart to the parking lot where she was stopped by a security agent. She left the backpack and contents and fled.

A former Elk Grove Village police officer now living in Ohio called 911 Monday to say he shot and killed his wife, authorities say. Jeffrey Hawkins worked as an Elk Grove cop from 1990 until 1999, when he resigned in the midst of an internal investigation into allegations he used excessive force during an arrest.
