  • Central High students shine in ‘The Music Man’ Oct 30, 2012 12:00 AM
    There may be trouble in River City, but in Burlington this weekend, there will be laughter and music. A cast and crew of about 70 Central High School students are getting ready for their fall play, “The Music Man,” which features such classic hits as “Ya Got Trouble,” “Till There Was You” and “Seventy-six Trombones.”

    Out of all the 2009 high school graduates within the Elgin Community College district boundaries, 76 percent enrolled in a college program within two years and 89 percent of those students stuck it out for a second year. As ECC President David Sam told gathered educators Thursday, those numbers don't mean much right now, but they're providing a benchmark to gauge improvement moving forward. The goal of the Alliance for College Readiness is to work together across high school districts to prepare students for success in work or college.

    Central District 301 has named new principals. Jeff King is moving from Gilberts Elementary School in Community Unit District 300 to become principal at Country Trails Elementary School in Elgin. Current Country Trails Principal Carie Walter is replacing Lloyd Stover at Central Middle School near Burlington.

  • Police reports Jan 26, 2012 12:00 AM
    The Elgin owner of a boxer mix dog was cited for having his dog at large with no collar or tags and for its dangerous behavior at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Seneca Street and Prospect Boulevard, according to police reports. The dog ran up to someone, jumped up and licked him on the face, reports said, and the individual said he felt threatened because the dog’s saliva could have made him sick.
